From Proto-Iranian *jānáHti Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬥𐬄𐬥 (zanąn, “to recognize”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ānáHti (compare Sanskrit जानाति (jānā́ti)), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵn̥néh₃ti, from *ǵneh₃- (“to know”) (compare English know).
