I am an inexperienced user who you recently offered to mentor and I would like to take you up on that kind offer. Not sure if I am responding in the right place, so if not, please forward your email to me where I can send examples of edits I wish to add to a wikipedia profile.

Hi Picnics! This is a good place to talk. I'll set up a new section below so you have somewhere to put any questions, examples, etc, and wait to see what you're up to :) Meadowlark (talk) 15:24, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Picnics, feel free to pop your examples (and anything else) here. You should be able to use 'reply' or 'edit section' to respond to me. If you use 'edit section', add a : before your first sentence to indent it - that makes it easier to keep track. If there's already a :, add another one so it indents further. I look forward to chatting about your editing plans! Meadowlark (talk) 15:26, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

My longtime hobby is genealogy and I am a member of wikitree.com. They allow wikipedia to be used as a source if the living notable wikipedia page contains named relatives. So I would like to make an edit for Rik Emmett at ...

He and I went to the same high school at the same time and BCI just had their 100th school reunion in April 2026 and Rik is the most widely known graduate. I have created a profile for him at wikitree.com at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Emmett-1863
but in order to make it visible to the public, they require his relatives to be named on wikipedia. Below are my online sources that anyone can verify.
The father of Rik Emmett was Robert Gordon Emmett (1928-2021) with his obituary which has his photo and names son Richard and Rik's wife Jeannette (nee Groulx) and their four children at ...

Rik's mother was Thelma Margaret (Baxter) Emmett and Rik posted a mother's day tribute to her on his Instagram page of them together when he was called Ricky @4yrs at ...

Rik married on 03 July 1976 and had 4 children and 4 grandchildren. On his Facebook page, Rik posted a photo of him and his wife on their 45th anniversary at ...

Thanks for your help, Picnics ~2026-27198-55 (talk) 15:51, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm going to be completely honest with you, I don't think you're going to get that to stick. The problem is that his parents' names is not really going to add anything to the article - it would be different if there was information about where he was born, his childhood, etc, or if his parents were notable in Wikipedia's sense of the word. But they and the rest of his family are just ordinary people, so you have to consider WP:BLPNAME, which says that there should be a strong presumption of privacy. If you did add them, I would anticipate the names being removed again quite quickly. I know that's not what you want to hear, and I'm sorry about that.
Does Wikitree not accept those sources? Obviously I don't know their policies, but it seems odd that they'd accept a Wikipedia article (people mess them up all the time!) and not a newspaper obituary. Meadowlark (talk) 17:48, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I can understand about privacy for Rik's living relatives, but are you saying it doesn't matter that both of Rik's parents are deceased and so they do not need privacy protection ? Thanks

BLP also covers the recently passed. MetalBreaksAndBends (talk) 19:13, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I checked about the obituary and was told that obits get special freedom as providing news. Wikitree.com does not have that privilege so they are afraid of a privacy lawsuit if they provide his parents names.

It's true that you can use obituaries for some information, and Instagram is sometimes acceptable for information about a subject's personal life if it's their own official account - the sources are not the main problem. I think it can (and would) be very easily argued that his parents' names have no encyclopedic value and don't need to be included. It's your decision whether or not you go ahead anyway, but don't rely on the information remaining in Rik's article.
I just went on a little investigation of Wikitree, it looks like if you want Rik's profile to become public the final thing you need is Wikipedia articles in multiple languages to include at least one nuclear family member's name. English Wikipedia is probably not the one to aim for here, because we have the strictest policies. Can I suggest looking in other language Wikipedias to see what their policies are around including the information you want? Meadowlark (talk) 04:42, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I will look into that. Thank you very much for your help. ~2026-27198-55 (talk) 10:14, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
