Waikerí

The Waikerí or Guaiquiríes are an Indigenous people of northern Venezuela. Their ethnonym either means 'men' or 'people'. Some argue they may be related to the Caribs. The Waikerí primarily live on Venezuela's coastal island of Isla Margarita. Historically, they also lived on Cubagua, Coche and in the nearby coastal areas of the mainland, such as the Araya Peninsula.

Language

According to Jose Alvarez, the Waikeri spoke Cumanagoto.^[1] Douglas Taylor (1977) mentined a suggestion grouping Waikeri with Warao.^[2] Čestmír Loukotka concluded that their language was a Cariban language and grouped it with Cumanagoto and other related languages.^[3]^: 215 One phrase in a conversation with a Waikerí man, Cuaca Patrì, ana, rote, Carinà acusinimbo, held in the Karina language, is recorded in Joseph Gumilla's (1745) book El Orinoco ilustrado y defendido.^[4]^: 68

Social organization

The Waikerí used a matrilineal kinship system. They used to use only the family line from the mother's side, but nowadays they use both their mother's and father's sides of the family.

Waikerís are matrilocal, which means couples usually live near the wife's family.
