English: Dismantling of the Monument of the Great October Revolution (featuring a statue of Lenin in the middle) on Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) in Kyiv, Ukraine, in early September 1991. The middle sign says: "In accordance with the decision of the City Executive Committee, preparatory work is underway for the dismantling of the monument." The left and right signs add: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused." The decision to dismantle the monument was made a few days after the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine on 24 August 1991 by the Verkhovna Rada. The statue of Lenin was removed on 12 September 1991, with the granite blocks following in October 1991 (see also File:October Revolution Square, September 1991.jpg). |
