AutoInsurance.com is an American online auto insurance comparison shopping website that enables consumers to obtain and compare quotes from multiple insurance carriers. Operated by Centerfield[1], a Los Angeles-based technology and digital customer acquisition company, the platform serves consumers in all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., and offers both an online quote comparison tool and access to U.S.-based licensed agents[2]. AutoInsurance.com is a subsidiary of Datalot[3], a digital distribution platform for the insurance industry.
History
editFounding and Walmart partnership
editAutoInsurance.com was established as a marketing partnership between Daniel Eckert, Senior Vice President of Services at Walmart U.S., and Joshua Kazam, founder of Tranzutary Insurance Solutions, LLC[4], a New Jersey-based licensed property and casualty insurance agency and subsidiary of TRANZACT[5]. The collaboration emerged after Walmart sought a simpler, more transparent way for its customers to compare and purchase auto insurance.[6]
In 2013, Walmart launched a pilot program in Pennsylvania to test the auto insurance comparison service[7]. Customers who purchased policies through AutoInsurance.com during the pilot period (April 2013 to March 2014) reported average annual savings of $1,168 on their insurance premiums, based on a survey of 5,228 consumers conducted by a national research firm[8].
In April 2014, Walmart formally announced the partnership and the national launch of AutoInsurance.com. At launch, the service was available in eight states—Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas—with plans to expand nationwide[9].
Lightyear Capital acquisition (2017)
editIn 2017, AutoInsurance.com and Datalot—a digital distribution platform for the insurance industry—were acquired by an investment fund affiliated with Lightyear Capital, a New York-based financial services-focused private equity firm[10][11]. The acquisition was made in partnership with Datalot founder and CEO Josh Reznick.[12][13]
Acquisition by Centerfield (2021)
editIn June 2021, Centerfield—a Los Angeles-based technology-enabled customer experience and digital customer acquisition company owned by private equity firm Platinum Equity[14]—signed a definitive agreement to acquire Datalot, including AutoInsurance.com, from an investment fund affiliated with Lightyear Capital. [1] [3]
Following the deal, AutoInsurance.com continues to operate as part of Centerfield's portfolio of owned and operated consumer-facing websites, alongside Datalot's broader digital marketing infrastructure.
Operations
editAutoInsurance.com operates as an insurance comparison marketplace, allowing consumers to receive and compare quotes from multiple national insurance carriers. In addition to online quote comparison, AutoInsurance.com provides access to U.S.-based licensed insurance agents[15], who can assist consumers in selecting and purchasing policies suited to their individual needs. The service is available to consumers in all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C.
