The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, often abbreviated to SNES or Super Nintendo, is a 16-bit home console made by Nintendo. It was first released in 1990 in Japan under the name Super Famicom, then in North America in 1991, and in Europe in 1992. It succeeded the Nintendo Entertainment System. As for the controller, it was redesigned from the NES controller to make it even more ergonomic.
History change
In 1988, Nintendo's competitor, Sega, released a new console that managed to overcome the failure of its predecessor (the Sega Master System), the Sega Mega Drive (titled Sega Genesis in America), which marked the beginning of the 16-bit console era. Although the Nintendo Entertainment System continued to perform well, it was starting to show its age from the players' perspective, so Nintendo had to create a new console to compete with the Mega Drive.
The designer of the NES, Masayuki Uemura, then created the Super Famicom (or Super Nintendo Entertainment System outside of Japan). It was released on November 21, 1990, and was an immediate success. The SNES quickly surpassed all its competitors, thanks in particular to its graphical power. It was also a success thanks to its vast and varied game catalog, and the controller, which was the first to have trigger buttons. The Super Nintendo Entertainment System sold a total of 49.10 million copies worldwide, surpassing the Sega Mega Drive, which sold about 39.70 million units.
Games change
The game catalog of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System is about as large large as that of its predecessor, the Nintendo Entertainment System. Its best-selling game is Super Mario World.
The system marked the beginning of several well-known and popular series like Mario Kart and Star Fox. It also had successful role-playing games like Final Fantasy II and Chrono Trigger.
Satellaview change
The Satellaview is a peripheral released exclusively for the Super Famicom in Japan on April 23, 1995. It allows users to play games online. This Satellaview is an extension that connects to the bottom of the SNES. However, it was a major commercial failure because the extension was released in 1995, which already began the era of 32-bit consoles, especially the PlayStation, which sold several units. In addition, at that time, Nintendo was already working on their 64-bit game console, the Nintendo 64. The first Satellaview game was BS The Legend of Zelda, a remake of The Legend of Zelda, correcting a few minor issues such as bugs. The online service ended on June 30, 2000.
Super NES Mini change
The Super NES Mini is a miniaturized version of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System that contains 21 pre-installed games. It was first released on September 29, 2017.
