In the world today, a lot of people are scared of saying their minds simply because it might be deemed offensive to a group of people. Regardless of the intent, we all have to think twice about the things we say, how we say it, and also the context around the things we say, because if we’re not careful, we could find ourselves embroiled in a scandal that we won’t be able to get out of.
And sadly, it only gets worse. Because the world only gets more sensitive and words only get more censored. Things that used to hold no weight before are now highly sensitive. And even without your knowledge, you could end up saying something scandalous. With your eyes wide open, you’d walk into a pit, and you wouldn’t even know you were in one until the court of public opinion began to shove heaps of dirt on you, trying to bury you!
I believe one industry that has suffered this the most is the comedy industry. The kind of jokes that used to be allowed in the 90s and early 2000s are no longer permissible. As a matter of fact, saying them today could end the person’s career. Comedians have their work cut out for them because they have fewer and fewer things to talk about, seeing as every other thing has been locked up in the censor jail.
So yeah, this practice is limiting. After all, we all have a right to free speech, we all should be able to say what’s on our minds without fear of losing our jobs or destroying our careers. But that’s not the case. These days, when you want to say something online, you have to go through it multiple times, not to edit errors, but to make sure that you’re not offending someone. Because if even a line is offensive, it won’t matter how carefully you searched, you’d be branded as a bigot and treated as such.
But then, what can we do? Just as we have a right to speech, we also have a right to peace of mind. Your right to speak freely shouldn’t trump my right to peace. If you choose to make fun of my body, tribe, religion, or family, I shouldn’t be forced to take it on a smiling face just because you have the right. We all have rights, and we have a job to coexist peacefully within these rights.
So, is the censorship necessary? Yeah. Simply because many humans don’t know when to stop, they’ll keep pushing their boundaries, seeing how much they can say and what they can get away with. That shouldn’t be the case. The world may be too sensitive right now, easily reacting to even the tiniest of things, but it’s what the current clime demands. If not, a tiny fraction of people will have no qualms verbally trampling on an entire group of people just because they can.
This is the world we live in. Too bad.
