New Hitchcock box set from Universal in October
Finally we may get the definitive Hitchcock box set from Universal. Previously they had released two box sets comprising Hitchcock's body of work while at Universal, and while some of the films made for great releases (like Rear Window), others that deserved equally good treatment like Vertigo did not. One of the most glaring foul-ups in the original release was the seemingly random application of anamorphic widescreen to the discs. Rear Window had it, but plenty of other WS films did not.
Of this new set, DVD Empire notes, "All titles in their original aspect ratios and color formats". Maybe that means they've finally come around fully on the anamorphic thing. There's also a great list of special features for each disc there, and while I'm too lazy to do a side-by-side comparison it seems like the features are different than those on the original releases.
And perhaps best of all: for all 14 films (and a bonus disc) the MSRP is only $119.98, so we'll be able to pick it up for around $80 or $90. Compare that to the original box sets which were $120 each. This new set breaks down to about $6 per movie. Amazing.
