Project Background

The Destination Master Plan proposes the building of a freeway cap or greenway over Highway 147 that provides an inviting and more walkable connection to downtown Durham from areas south of the highway. This infrastructure will also provide additional surface area to support more parks, greenspace, retail nodes, historical landmarks, venues and/or other community assets. Examples of freeway caps or greenways in other urban areas include:

The Regional Transportation Alliance is currently conducting research to identify various locations around the Triangle region, including over Highway 147, where freeway caps would be most structurally feasible and assessing state level transportation agency support for such projects.  Please check back here for project updates, engagement opportunities and partnership announcements.
