The violin bow moved gracefully against the strings, held carefully in place by Sophie's fingers. They weren't thin enough nor long enough to move the bow that quickly. Klaus was keen to spot that flaw as it had been spotted for him so many years ago.

Sitting back and allowing Sophie to play had been a tolerable burden for him and a privilege for Sophie. She was happy to have an audience and he enjoyed the objects that made her happy.

"Your painting sold today for a few marks."

The bow faltered just a bit but she continued her song. He smiled at that for she was learning not to be so easily distracted. "Pity about the harpsichord," he countered himself. "That would've gone for a good amount."

The money he was garnering from her valuables went into his own fund for material possessions he found charming. Like the slot machine he had set up in Lucard's living room.

He admired her body as she swayed with her music. Her fingers moved through the air, faster and faster as they danced along the bow and strings, trying so hard to produce those notes that seemed so elusive to her.

Klaus most admired her face, how she smiled without happiness and how her eyes gleamed with a hidden madness and tears that if she dared to shed, would cost her dearly. Her lips pursed in concentration but the corners of her mouth were forever turned upward.

"You'll never be at the level of the greats," Klaus remarked candidly as she played on.

Still, Sophie made no insult back to him. Nor did she stop smiling.

"They don't enjoy listening to you. They never will." Klaus did not need to explain who 'they' were. Sophie knew. He knew. That was enough.

Tears finally crashed against the wooden body of the violin, wetting the wood and running down the thin body until they splashed upon the floor. Still, Sophie smiled and hoped Klaus wouldn't notice.

Klaus noticed everything.

The next day, he sold her violin and bought himself a large paperweight that lasted for all of thirty seconds as he flung it out the window and laughed as it smashed into a passerby's skull.
