"You made this choice, Klaus! You made it for me!"

"I made it for you, father! Don't you see? It's better now! Everything is better! You'll live!" Klaus smiled widely, pleased at his actions.

Gustav frowned. "It's not better now. You had no right! No right at all! You knew that I wouldn't want this!"

"I knew you wouldn't want to die at the hands of that fool. That's not a good death at all. Really, father, why can't you just accept the fact that I did something good for you? Is it so hard?"

Gustav's mind was reeling. He felt ever so hungry but to allow himself to even think about eating at a time like this was absurd. Klaus saw his father stagger and reached out for him, ignoring Gustav's feeble attempts to get out of his arms. He pulled Gustav down onto the floor and cradled the older man tenderly.

"Don't you see? This way, you're free. Here. I've brought you something." Klaus took out a flask from his jacket. "Drink this. I knew you'd be hungry."

Gustav didn't want to know where the drink had come from. He couldn't fight off Klaus' hand as Klaus held open his mouth and poured the drink in. He choked a bit and then forced himself to keep the liquid down.

"This goes against everything I believe in, Klaus."

"Believed in, you mean, father. You're dead now."

"No thanks to you."

Klaus' smile dropped at that comment and a hurt expression took its place. Gustav, despite himself, felt guilty.

"I didn't mean that. You did what you felt you had to do, Klaus. What you had been taught to do."

"I wasn't taught to do such a thing for an enemy, father."

An enemy. Yes, Gustav knew he was still his son's enemy. Only not any longer. To fight against Klaus now would be hypocritical and a child can never harm their sire. So ludicrous how their positions had been reversed with Klaus as the father and Gustav as the son. It was a vile trade of lives and souls but Gustav knew that such a trade had been done out of love. He hadn't thought it possible that dark creatures could love but he still felt that emotion even now. Even as he looked upon his own damned, accursed son.

"Why do you fear, Klaus?"

"Huh?"

"Why do you fear death so much that you'd seek this life for yourself and also deny me the choice of it?"

Klaus had no answer. He never thought about such a question. He could only hold his father closer to him and listen to Gustav's heartbeat that seemed to slow with every passing minute. When the night came again, Klaus allowed Gustav to leave.

It takes a good father to know when to let go.
