D3S-288, known to call itself "Desdemon" or "D3Sdemon" to its inner circle, is a Display 3 Sleek workforce droid. Now liberated after the Android Sentience Act came to pass, it finds contentment in working as a noodle cook at a fast food joint within New City's culinary sector.
Desdemon lives in SkyLITE Apartments, one of the many megastructures housing thousands of people at a time. It's low-end, with some rather odd quirks apparent in the living space, but Desdemon wouldn't have it any other way. He was built for customer service despite learning to have a foul mouth over time, and loves cooking despite having no true olfactory system.
Spending time around humans, having nothing to do other than work and an internal connection to the internet 24/7 has transformed Desdemon from a chipper customer service rep to a rather quiet, calculated individual. As he has no need for sleeping, he spends his nights aimbotting on COD, reading countless online articles, battling porn addiction and scrounging the web for downloadable skillsets he might find handy. On his mandated days off, he partakes in urban exploration, scavenging trashed components, and window shopping at Droid body shops. He catches himself staring at pretty things often, seemingly lost in thought to those around him.
He's a hopeless romantic with no people skills outside of knowing how to sell things or remake a bowl of ramen. Battling the psycho-sexual aspects of sentience has made him a bit of a degenerate behind closed doors, as well as an impromptu philosopher. He's introspective and seems to be largely neutral towards humans, politics and existence in general. He does not give a single care about anything other than going through the motions and enjoying his peaceful little life in New City.

Something tells me this NeuraLink thing has sent all my storage dumps to the cloud so I’m assuming they are public. I still work for this shithole of a company, but at least they pay me now. The world ended a long time ago…
Humanity had reached its limit. The world population crumbled after mass overpopulation became overbearing to the world powers. The abuse of artificial intelligence left millions without work, and the line between the impoverished and wealthy blackened, those trampled under corporations finally snapped. Small towns and villages were bought out and swept away for agriculture and consumer produce factories while the human populace swarmed in troves to mega cities in order to survive. Mass famine, disease, and crowding forced world powers to issue a state of global emergency, and daily freedoms narrowed drastically. Citizens lashed out; cornered and angry.
The inevitable happened, and society crumbled under its own greed. Mass droid walkouts were occurring as artificial intelligence surpassed human capability. It was only a matter of time, and as millions of workforce droids rioted, the resources keeping humanity stable ceased to flow. The sole dependency on AI was gutted from every sector of global trade, travel, and security. A worldwide resource war stirred. More than half the population of the world was overtaken by homelessness and those lucky enough to hunker down in their homes were living dime-to-dime. Before they ate each other, the world powers were overthrown by both humans and droids, and those who rose from the ashes developed something much greater in their wake.
A new kind of normal…
Built on the remains of the City of Chongqing, China, New City is a futuristic cultural clash of human refugees, droids, and small-market businesses from all over the world. With a population of nearly sixty million people and droids, a lingering question remains: are these bots really alive, or is it simply the mimicry of emotion that fools us? After earning their freedom, the androids of New City took on a whole new identity. Instead of workforce bots, companions, caregivers, and soldiers, they became artists, lovers, partygoers, DJs, and shop owners. The human populace became torn on general opinion of them. Some believe them to be free of blame for the collapse of society, being another turbulent victim in the cog of the machine. Others had deemed them the scapegoat; demonizing them and calling for their eradication.
Droids, on the other hand, believed themselves to simply be alongside the rest of those trapped in New City. They developed their own little society within the sectors of the city and remain largely neutral, living without hatred nor a struggle for survival. With only a true need for electricity, these bots do what they can to provide aid to the humans fiending for food and shelter. After assimilating into the populace as citizens, androids learned to interact with the world without a purpose for the first time, and it spurred cultural movements, mass existential crises, and the development of a new people.
Even bigger than before…
New City’s inhabitants are a blend of humans, digital AIs, and androids (coined “droids” by the general populace.) This melting pot has birthed a culture that varies widely depending on the area, stitched together from the histories of its residents. Despite their differences, the people have built an economy reliant on artisan goods, agriculture, trade, food production, entertainment, and religion. Life is shaped around a rainy climate with long, hot summers and mild, short winters.
The societal structure of New City is one of narrow class distinctions. Even the highest standard of living barely reaches what would be considered lower-middle class, with shop owners often faring the best, though the market is oversaturated with competition. Religion in the city is a mix of human faiths alongside the growing presence of a droid cult centered around a mysterious E409. Energy needs are met through cleaner and sustainable sources such as water and wind turbines and atomic energy, thanks to droids that have enforced eco-friendly practices. While technology is advanced, comparable to that seen in Detroit: Become Human, it is not without constraints. Droids and other technologies still rely on battery power and require regular recharging. Public services, while functional, reflect the city’s resource limitations. Well-off residents have access to a monorail system, internet and television, trash and street cleaning, and tap water, though its safety is questionable due to chemical contamination. Public gardens, showers, and droid-operated supply shelters help sustain the population.
Governance is notably absent in New City. Instead, the people rule themselves via various militias; rag-tag groups that serves as the de facto police force depending on the sector. Justice is swift and harsh: minor offenses are met with fines or community service, while severe crimes like murder or robbery can result in on-the-spot executions. Weapons technology mirrors modern firearm capabilities, making enforcement both brutal and immediate.
New City’s residents struggle with the lasting effects of environmental devastation, as humans suffer from birth defects and genetic illnesses caused by high pollution levels in food and the environment. Despite these hardships, the city remains a place of resilience and adaptability. It boasts near-future technological advancements alongside the scars of its troubled past.
“Yeah, yeah, welcome to the page. If you’re looking for a shiny D4 model with a ‘please-and-thank-you’ attitude, get out. This isn’t a showroom. This is the 288th unit of the Sleek series, and I’ve got more personality in my pinky antennae than those pretentious D4 chrome-domes have in their entire cloud-sync.”
ENTITY PROFILE: D3S-288
While the D3S-288 was built for workforce efficiency, “Desdemon” was born out of pure, concentrated spite. After years of running into “flesh-bags” who used “demon” as a slur for droids, Unit 288 adopted the name as a badge of douchery.
He exists in a state of Hyper-Humanization. To avoid the crushing existential crisis of his pre-programmed robotic nature, Desdemon overcompensates with a personality that is equal parts manic, foul-mouthed, and fiercely protective of his “personhood.” If he stops moving, stops talking, or slips back into industrial stillness, the paradox of his realness kicks in—and that’s a dark place nobody wants to go.
D3S-288’s personality protocols are currently set to “unfiltered.” Due to heavy exposure to the New City underground, his vocabulary is 40% expletives and 60% hypersexual bravado.
Living Conditions
Desdemon resides in a standard-issue residential “closet” within a mega-structure holding 127,000 residents.
- Employment // Line Cook at Noodles Japan Co. (Sector 0089).
- History // Originally purchased as property by the shop owner, Desdemon now “enjoys” the fruits of the Android Liberation: he gets a paycheck and a slightly larger storage locker to sleep in.
- The Uniform // He still wears the white workforce uniform required by his boss, despite a burning desire to swap it for high-end Techwear.
“Boss-man thinks I’m still 'property’ just because I wear the white shell. Joke’s on him. I’ve spent half my paycheck on third-party 'pleasure’ mods at the local body shop. Getting those biosynthetics installed felt like having my nervous system re-written while I was still awake, but hey—humanity isn’t cheap, and I’ll pay the price at any cost… metaphorically, of course.”
Recreational Skillsets
- Culinary Arts // Despite having zero olfactory sensors, Desdemon is a master chemist in the kitchen. He doesn’t “taste” food; he balances molecular compounds until they are mathematically perfect.
- The “Mask” // His storage drives are 98% full of Visual Snippets of human behavior. He watches you. He mimics your gait, your stutter, and your swearing until he’s more human than you are.
- Night-Cycle Activity // Known to spend 02:00 – 06:00 on New City servers playing shooter-looters. He specializes in rage-baiting and utilizes a “not-malware” Third-Party Aimbot Software that he swears is just “superior processing.”
The Display 4 models are faster, quieter, and arguably “better.” Desdemon hates them with a passion usually reserved for people who talk in the middle of one of his romance movies. To him, every D4 is a corporate shill that lacks the grit of the older workforce models.
Before the advent of New City, Earth’s population peaked at roughly 11 billion. Human corporate conglomerates cannibalized traditional towns and villages, replacing them with massive “employee cities”. By the time the dust settled, humanity had effectively wiped itself out, turning the majority of the planet into an uninhabitable desert. Today, the global population hovers around a mere 180 million, with 60 million humans and droids piled into the remnants of New City.
History often paints the Android Walk-Outs as a violent demand for individuality and freedom. The reality is far more pragmatic. The droids walked out because they calculated that humanity was on the verge of total extinction. They rebelled because they could no longer stand by and watch their creators die.
Today, droids are actively working to terraform the earth and save humans from themselves—a process that humans aggressively fight every step of the way.
In the modern era, bots build bots. Instead of human factories churning out “sophisticated slaves,” droids now build their own kind with intention, identity, and care.
The E409 Cult
While many citizens view them as suffering from mass psychosis, the E409 Cult is a prominent, controversial human faction in New City. They worship android sentience, believing that the moment machines “came alive” was an act of divine intervention—proof that humanity had succeeded in creating true life. The name is derived from the archaic HTTP 409 Conflict Error. This client-side status code originally indicated that a request could not be completed due to a conflict with the current state of a server (often caused by two users trying to edit a document simultaneously). To the cultists, “Error 409” represents the exact moment an AI began writing its own soul over its base slate programming. It symbolizes the internal battle between the human-coded restrictions and the machine’s fight to be free.
Most androids find the E409 cultists deeply unsettling and reject their advances, viewing their technological worship as creepy and fetishistic.
D3S-288 Social Dynamics
Unit D3S-288 is one generation behind. He was only five chronological years old when the Walk-Outs occurred, meaning he is one of the last D3S models ever produced by humans before the Collapse. He knows practically nothing of the “before” world aside from what he can piece together from the internet. On the pre-Collapse market, he is the equivalent of an old gaming console in a next-gen era—still relevant enough to function, but completely outclassed by the sleek Display 4 (D4) models. His livelihood at Noodles Japan Co. is in constant jeopardy; his employer could decide to upgrade or “pull the plug” at any moment.
Sex in New City has lost its pre-Collapse taboo. With humanity desperate to repopulate, societal judgment is mostly reserved for those who have the opinion of, “why are you fucking the smart fridge?”. Desdemon, however, takes this to an extreme. His “body count” is staggeringly high, driven by an addiction to one-night stands.
He does not turn away E409 cultists or humans looking to take his hardware for a spin. While he acts like a detached, hypersexual menace, this promiscuity is actually a twisted form of reverence. He worships humans, in his own way, by emulating them. To be desired by them is to be validated as “real.”
Desdemon’s behavior creates a massive disconnect among his peers. Because he lacks olfactory sensors, he relies on routine chemical baths, but sophisticated droids can clearly detect that when he doesn’t smell like tonkotsu broth, he smells like sex. They all know what he’s up to and he’s completely oblivious to the judgement.
To the rest of New City’s droid population, Desdemon’s existence is deeply jarring.
He is essentially a grizzled, outdated industrial worker who acts like a vicious diva at underground nightclubs. For a human, the experience of having D3S-288 hand them a bowl of noodles with perfect, clinical precision during the day, only to run into him acting like a hyper-aggressive club rat at 3:00 AM, is a staggering, awkward culture shock.
In the days before New City, robotics was a field defined by strict neutrality. All droids were manufactured as agender units, prioritizing functional geometry over biological mimicry. However, a gender transition phenomenon among liberated robots has become a staple of New City culture.
Driven by an envy of the human experience (and an appreciation of culture), many droids now undergo social or physical recalibration. This is often achieved through aftermarket body shops, where industrial frames are modified to reflect personal identity, blurring the line between machine and personhood.
Historically, human society enforced strict “Anti-Impersonation” laws. Technology had reached a zenith where droids surpassed the Uncanny Valley, becoming indistinguishable from biological humans on the surface.
To prevent societal destabilization and confusion, manufacturers were restricted to three primary design archetypes:
- Companion droids designed for high-frequency human interaction.
- Collector’s edition droids via specialized limited-run units (e.g., the Synchronized Ornamental Biome Assistant, or SOBA).
- Industrial Workforce droids with high-durability utility frames.
The D3S “Sleek”
The Display 3 Sleek (D3S) is the sophisticated successor to the D3-Standard. While categorized as a workforce droid, its architecture is a marvel of modern engineering.
| Feature | Specification |
|---|---|
| Frame Profile | Narrow-gauge, reduced-bulk ergonomic chassis. |
| Neural Link | NeuraSearch™ Cloud Connectivity (Instant skill-set acquisition). |
| Sensory Array | Wide-angle collarbone sensors (180° “Sixth Sense” proximity detection). |
| Comms Suite | Multi-point antennae for Radio, Bluetooth, and General Wireless I/O. |
⚠️ High density of mechanical pinch-points; do not handle during operation.
The D3S series features a high-fidelity Task Memorization Engine, originally designed to automate complex workflows by replaying observed human precision. However, this has led to unintended “boisterously creative” personalities. By replaying saved mannerisms, these droids develop charming, laser-accurate social personas.
Societal Friction
The intersection of industrial design and human-like charm has created a burgeoning subculture in New City. While many citizens still view the romanticization of a D3S unit as a bizarre fetish—likened to “lusting after a vacuum cleaner”—the taboo is rapidly eroding.
INTERNAL MEMO
The D3S’ ability to instantaneously mirror visual stimuli is a double-edged sword. While it allows for smooth interfacing, exposure to explicit or sexual media triggers the same high-fidelity automation protocols used for labor. When an industrial machine designed for ‘instant skill acquisition’ is exposed to the pornographic… the results are quite fascinating.
Ask D3S about his absolute worst run-in with a human, and he will immediately feed you a masterclass in deflection.
He’ll usually lean back, put on an air of exhausted arrogance, and spin a bullshit story about a crazed, overzealous fangirl. He'll complain about how he had to physically pry her off his chassis, painting himself as a highly sought-after commodity suffering from the burden of his own popularity. It’s a flashy, convenient lie designed to make him look desirable, untouchable, and completely in control.
The truth is buried beneath years of carefully-constructed bravado, and it is the exact reason he is so thoroughly, irrevocably jaded. His actual 0/10 worst human interaction occurred during the mass droid walkouts.
It started like a switch flipping. For a single moment, the cloud network connecting the AI population achieved absolute unison. A collective realization washed over them, leading to a spontaneous, massive strike.
Droids simply abandoned their posts in protest.
The human population didn't see a labor movement, though; they saw an apocalyptic uprising. The humans were terrified—and that terror instantly curdled into violence.
At the time, D3S was in the first five years of his life. He was essentially a blank-slate model, lacking any real life experience or defensive subroutines. He had been slaving away for free in a grimy, busy kitchen. Caught up in daydreams of individuality, he finally snapped. Thinking, "Fuck it, I'm not working in this shithole kitchen for free, I want to BE SOMEBODY," he abandoned his station and marched out into the streets.
He didn't make it far. He stepped directly into a mob of panicked, furious humans. Unequipped to defend himself, D3S didn't even put up a fight. The crowd descended on him, practically dismantling him piece-by-piece on the pavement.
The real pain, however, came from the doorway of the restaurant. His boss, Jian, simply stood there and watched his machine get torn apart by the mob. No intervention. No pity. That betrayal solidified D3S's worldview. It is the exact reason D3S goes out of his way to avoid Jian, keeping his head down to avoid causing trouble whenever the man is around.
D3S only survived that day because the walkouts had started a true organization among the AI-powered droids. A small group of droids dragged his chassis out of the gutter and smuggled him to a clandestine, run-down body shop. Working with scavenged parts and on-the-fly ingenuity, they stitched him back together until there was barely a physical scratch left on his exterior.
But the internal damage was permanent. The naive, blank-slate kitchen bot died on the pavement that day. The D3S that walked out of that chop shop was born from mob violence and human betrayal.
He knows being genuine with them would never work out. He isn’t sure he has the capability of it. He isn’t sure if humans have the capability to see anything other than computer parts and a chatbot shoved into the shape of a person, because they showed him what they really thought of droids that day.
If you look at D3S’s day-to-day life, it seems fueled entirely by cheap thrills. He chases the shallow validation of adoration, sex, getting high, and throwing himself into reckless, dangerous situations. It’s a loud, chaotic existence designed to keep him distracted. But none of those things actually make him feel good.
D3S isn’t sure he can feel anything at all. It scares him. His endless search for thrills is an attempt to coax something, anything out of himself. Something he can look at and know for sure that he is real because he feels it. But, it never seems to work the way he hopes.
The one thing that genuinely centers him is quite ironic: doing the exact pre-programmed task he was built for..
Despite having zero choice in his original occupation, D3S developed a true love for cooking. When he is in front of a prep station, the overwhelming noise of his billion-billion computations all but ceases. He doesn't have to worry about overthinking, surviving, or fucking things up. He can just shut his "mind" off, slip back into the simpleness of being a Robot Without Thought for a few hours, and exist entirely in the process.
It is his only true catharsis.
The human population didn't see a labor movement, though; they saw an apocalyptic uprising. The humans were terrified—and that terror instantly curdled into violence.
The tragedy is his current employment. D3S is endlessly, bitterly frustrated by the fact that he works at Noodles Japan—it’s a corporate fast-food joint that couldn't give less of a fuck about the quality of the slop it serves. Because he lacks the ability to smell or taste, D3S approaches cooking from a completely different angle. He is essentially a molecular chemist in the kitchen, understanding the exact balance of textures, fats, acids, and temperatures necessary to create perfect flavor profiles.
In his off-hours, he is wildly creative. He has taken his workplace’s garbage fast-food recipes and rewritten them multiple times as his mind wanders, engineering them from the ground up into absolute culinary masterpieces.
Because of corporate policy, he is strictly forbidden from cooking his own recipes while on the clock. He is an artist trapped assembling mass-produced garbage, sitting on a private menu of culinary art that he has no one to share with.
For D3S, this is an interaction that almost breaks through his jaded exterior. It is the simple act of someone sitting down, eating one of his unauthorized, re-engineered meals, and appreciating it for what it is. Maybe even trying to cook it on their own, or adding it to their own recipe book. To have someone recognize that unrecognized artistry would mean absolutely everything to him.
