if we can set aside attachment discourse for a moment (please) i think the jedi marriage prohibition makes sense in a “please don’t enter a complex legal, financial, social, and in some cases religious contract, the specifics of which vary wildly depending on planet and culture” way. the single jedi with a law degree does not have time to draft everyone’s prenups to prevent the whole order from getting sued

#we could create so many interesting new problems if we ignore romance and make it about contracts generally#jedi prohibition on getting a loan. jedi prohibition on signing a waiver before bungee jumping. etc

"Qui-Gon didn't try to buy Anakin or the engine because there wasn't anyone in town who offered a credit exchange service" wrong. Qui-Gon gambled for Anakin under the table because after dealing with the Cyrkon Delinquency of 24850, Master Olobi, Esq, has personally promised to hang by the the toes from the highest tower of the Temple for one week any Jedi who generates any trackable legal transaction or obligation between the Order and the Hutts.

#fandom is all about creating interesting new problems#it does imply that intra-jedi marriages might be acceptable#presumably less paperwork#much to consider (tags via @celinamarniss)

“I had time to run home and pack a bag and get to the beach where the boats were waiting,” said a member of Namaygoosisagagun First Nation (Collins). “We literally had minutes to get on the boats and flee before it took our town.
“Once we left my house finally after packing what I could in a pack sack, the fire was right behind our place. We had to run to the beach and once we got there, it was only moments before the fire had jumped over the (train) track and was coming for us.”

it has since been confirmed that namaygoosisagagun first nation has completely burnt to the ground. if you would like to help the community navigate an ongoing crisis, i urge you to donate to the anishinabek nation 7th generation, a registered charity seeking to improve the lives of first nations people. donations are going directly to members of namaygoosisagagun first nation.

if you're canadian, you can e-transfer an7gc@anishinabek.ca. if you're outside canada, they accept paypal as well. see more information HERE

Periodic reminder that:

  • There are still MASSIVE wildfires across central, western, and northern Canada, with over 550 active fires, only around 1/4 of which are 'under control'.
  • The 2025 wildfire season is on track to be the second worst on record, after the 2023 wildfire season. So far 5.4 MILLION hectares have burned. That's bigger than Denmark and Montenegro combined.)
  • These fires have forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes, in particular Indigenous communities which have been disproportionately affected.
  • We are at National Prepardness Level 5 (the highest possible), meaning all firefighters and equipment in every jurisdiction in Canada are being used and emergency international help has been requested (to my knowledge, this summer help has come from Australia, Costa Rica, Mexico, New Zealand, and the United States)
Map of Canada's active wildfires as of July 15, 2025. The map is covered in dots, with purple dots representing fires that are out of control but monitored, yellow representing fires being held, red representing fires out of control, and blue representing fires that are under control. Orange dots represent fires in other jurisdictions, such as Alaska. Nunavut has no dots, Yukon and the NWT have many purple dots and some red and a couple of yellow dots. BC has mainly blue dots, except for the north which has mostly yellow. Northern AB has mostly blue dots, with some red and yellow. Northern SK has mostly red dots with some purple, and Northern MB has mostly purple and red dots. Northwestern ON has mostly purple dots with some red. Newfoundland has a couple of blue, red, and yellow dots.ALT

Active wildfires in Canada (July 15, 2025)

I know that people typically only care about wildfires when the smoke from them ends up in bigger cities and ruins your air quality. And yes, that is bad, especially for high-risk folks.

BUT please remember that the smoke you are complaining about is coming from somewhere. It was our communities, people's homes, the precious ecosystems that sustain us. Just because the fires might be far away from you doesn't mean they're far away.

If you would like to support wildfire relief efforts but aren't sure how, this link (although a bit old), is a good place to start looking for places to help. For example, the Manitoba Métis Federation apparently just announced they're again looking for donations to support evacuees.

Three words: "dumb fuck republicans."

Excerpt from this Mother Jones story:

A group of Republican lawmakers has complained that smoke from Canadian wildfires is ruining summer for Americans, just days after voting for a major bill that will cause more of the planet-heating pollution that is worsening wildfires.

In a letter sent to Canada’s ambassador to the US, six Republican members of Congress wrote that wildfire smoke from Canada had been an issue for several years and recently their voters “have had to deal with suffocating Canadian wildfire smoke filling the air to begin the summer.”

“Our constituents have been limited in their ability to go outside and safely breathe due to the dangerous air quality the wildfire smoke has created,” the group of House of Representative members from Wisconsin and Minnesota wrote on July 7. “In our neck of the woods, summer months are the best time of the year to spend time outdoors recreating, enjoying time with family, and creating new memories, but this wildfire smoke makes it difficult to do all those things.”

The lawmakers urged Canada to take “proper action” to reduce the smoke and noted the historic friendship between Canada and America, without mentioning Donald Trump’s repeated demands for Canada to be annexed and become the 51st state of the US.
