27th Birthday Resolutions

I got to thinking: isn't it odd that we always make resolutions for New Year's, but how often do we ever use our birthday as a means for a clean slate? When we're kids, we look forward to our birthdays for the presents, the parties, and the junk food. As adults, we tend to dread the holiday, as it means we're getting another year older. We always worry about what we haven't yet done and how much time we have left to do it, but do we ever sit down and use our birthdays as a marker? A time to make resolutions? A time to reflect?

I'm not going to reflect too much. After all, I do that in my yearly New Year's resolution posts. :) But when it comes to resolutions, that's something I can do. Between now and my next birthday, a lot's going to happen. I'm going to finish my second draft of my novel. I'm going to graduate Seton Hill. Provided I don't hate my novel by then, it's going to be out in the market, begging for a home.

Those aren't resolutions, per se, but it's what I expect to happen between now and then. Resolutions, then, are actually going to be a little more abstract: I'm going to take charge of my life and put my writing first, even if it means shooting myself in the foot when it comes to employment. I realize more and more that a full-time job may not be what I need as a writer, and if I focus, I can use my writing to supplement my income. I can't do this as a full-timer, because frankly I'm too tired and too drained when I get home to work on projects other than my novel, but given the extra time, that just might be feasible. If not, then you can bet that this time next year, I'm going to be taking some serious steps towards employment that gets me out of this neck of the woods. Enough said.

My birthday was Saturday, and it was a quiet one. Greg took me out to Abuelo's for dinner, and then we went shopping for my birthday present, as evidenced by this photo. No, I didn't get a cat for my birthday. I've had Blitz since my sophomore year of college (come to think of it, she WAS a birthday present at the time), and she currently lives at my grandmother's, where she spends her time terrorizing the denizens of the basement. She's a beautiful little calico, even if she is evil.

No, my gift was a digital camera, which I'm slowly figuring out. Turns out Storm Shadow isn't the best subject in the world, as he doesn't like to stay still when he's hyper, and when he's hyper, that's when there's the best shots. We'll see. You can expect some Storm Shadow photos in the future, and god only knows what else.

I spent today at my grandmother's, getting a belated birthday dinner and watching the Titans game. It's been a relaxing day, even though I did have to come home to do laundry. I shouldn't be on LJ now, but I haven't posted much and wanted to show off my picture of Blitz, because again, she's just a pretty kitty.

Not much else to say right now. I passed the term with flying covers, and my critical essay went over really well, thank god. Already it's time to focus on next term, and Tim's already wrangled my reading list out of me, and I'm browsing through the module choices for January. Far better than last residency, that's for sure.

At any rate, this post is obviously brought to you by Procrastinators-R-Us. I should jump off here and get back to work. Cheers!
