Pretty cool youre just offering this for free. Stuff like this actually helped me get unstuck before.

Thanks @nevodavid! I'm also a volunteer at HackYourFuture so offering help for free comes easy! Glad to hear something similar has helped you before, I believe we are all in this together and realizing that more people suffer from imposter syndrome or being scared to take ownership is incredibly valuable.

Please note, due to popular demand most slots are gone. I opened up Tuesdays as well next to Fridays, but they are also mostly booked. If you would like to book a call but there are no options, please leave a comment on this topic and I will open more days. I want to help as many people as possible!

this is super generous, honestly - most stuff is behind paywalls now. you think people get more out of guidance or figuring things out alone?

Thanks @nevodavid ! If I look at my own career then I see a mix of both guidance and figuring out things alone. At my first jobs I was left on my own too much, once I moved to another company and I got guided while figuring things out alone my progression went through the roof!

Wow, what an overwhelming response! Almost 20 applications within 24 hours and the Fridays are mostly full until end of July. To give more people the opportunity to get a call with me and level up in their development career, I'm opening up a few more slots on Tuesdays. Hope to see you there!

gotta say, stuff like this means a lot when youre in that weird stuck spot - makes me wonder, you think the biggest leaps come from tough feedback or just having someone listen?

Honestly, for me having someone that listens always provided more value than receiving tough feedback. I received a lot of tough feedback at my first job, to the point where I wanted to quit development completely. Then I ended up at a new company and all of the sudden I got a lot of room for asking questions, coaching, mentoring, admitting to insecurities and I was guided to a better path and within 3 years grew from medior to team lead.

It will depend on the person of course, some might respond better to tough feedback than others. But I also see that a warm, compassionate approach helps with the majority of the trainees I help.

How is that for you?

Hi everyone! Because of the high demand for these growth calls, I've opened up one slot every day of the workweek and they can be booked up until 60 days in advance. I believe that career advice should be accessible to all (regardless of budget, time, experience) and want to help as many people possible to get unstuck.

pretty cool someone’s giving real time for this, feels rare - you ever notice if momentum in your own path comes from outside help or just pushing by yourself?

Thanks @nathan_tarbert , helping people out is something I enjoy a lot and I hope to foster an inclusive community where we can talk about our career path!

When it comes to my own path, I think it was a mix. I always push myself but I've learned so much from other developers: how to take ownership, how to review better (my review skills have significantly increased once I started taking notes from other seniors), what to focus on/how to set priorities.

And you?

Love what you're doing here - quick chats like this have helped me tons in the past. Have you noticed any recurring themes or challenges developers bring up most often?

Thank you @dotallio and glad to hear it has helped you in the past! I hope it will provide value for others as well and if you ever feel like you can use a bit of support again, feel free to book a call.

Great question btw and yes, definitely. Some recurring themes are: taking ownership, presenting/speaking, imposter syndrome, setting goals. Especially ownership is something that I've mentored people on and it's surprising how often we hold ourselves back and wait until a task, internal project, or feature is handed to us. I used to think like that as well, but when I started saying "let me do this", my growth skyrocketed!
