Over the past few weeks, I’ve explore with you how to choose a developer path: from technical deep dives to people leadership, and everything in between. Whether you’re at a fork in the road or just getting curious, this series is for you. Week 1 was about exploring (experimentation, choosing a growth theme), Week 2 we've focused on becoming visible and taking initiative, while the final week was about claiming growth (or moving away) and choosing your own path. I hope you've enjoyed it!
When You’re Doing Everything “Right” (and Still Feel Stuck)
You’re showing up, you’re delivering, you’ve mentored, suggested improvements, maybe even led an initiative.
But nothing changes.
No new responsibilities, no feedback, no signs of a next step.
That’s when it’s time to stop guessing and start talking.
The One Question That Changed My Path
“I’d love to grow in [X]. Is there room for that here?”
Simple, direct, and honest.
Sometimes, the response is: “Yes! Let’s figure that out.”
Other times…silence. Both answers give you clarity!
What to Say (If You’re Not Sure How to Ask)
- “What’s one area I could level up in?”
- “Where do you see my strengths right now?”
- “Is there a chance to lead something small?”
- “Can I take on more ownership in [X]?”
- “I’m curious about [tech/mentoring/leadership], could I try that on a small scale?”
These are growth conversations. They open doors or show you which ones are locked.
If Nothing Changes…Move.
Some teams talk a good game about growth. But nothing ever materializes.
If that’s your reality, it’s okay to move on. Not out of spite, but out of self-respect.
You’re allowed to find a place that nurtures your potential instead of just using your skills.
Final Thought
Don’t wait forever for someone else to chart your path, instead start the conversation or bring a suggestion. Be direct, but try to be open.
If the door stays shut?
Find another one.
