Introduction
The term “Big 3” is iconic among anime fans, referring to legendary titles like Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece.
Similarly, in the world of game development, if we talk about the “Big 3” game engines, it’s safe to say they are:
- Unity
- Unreal
- Godot
All of these Big 3 game engines have a small economy running inside them. For example, Unity has a marketplace where developers can buy and sell assets that can be integrated into the Unity platform. Unity has the best game engine assets store out there, so often it's considered a big plus point for Unity users.
Similarly, Unreal Engine also has its own Marketplace.
Epic Games has now introduced Fab.com, a new asset store that replaces the traditional Unreal Marketplace.
What makes Fab special is that it doesn’t just serve Unreal — it also supports assets for Unity, Godot, Blender, and general 2D/3D workflows.
But what about Godot? Although Godot has an official assets library - Godot Assets Library. It's functional but lacks the flair and functionality of its competitors.
Now that changes as Godot is officially launching its own curated Asset Store!
You can preview the beta version of their new assets library here--Godot Assets Store. This is a replacement of their old Godot Assets Library.
According to the roadmap published by the Godot team, soon, the old Godot Assets Library will be replaced by Godot Assets Store. And this isn't just a name change, this change includes:
- Drag and drop to install assets
Assets can be dragged and dropped from the browser to the editor to easily install directly into a project.
- Buy and sell assets
Although the current beta version and the current assets library only include free assets, they will be replaced soon.
- Asset store CLI (My Personal Favourite)
Assets can be managed and uploaded from the terminal.
And it also includes
- Abstract review count
- Better notifications
- Asset analytics
- Better search
- Discovery system
- Mobile view
And this new asset store would also affect the Godot game engine. Yes, according to the roadmap of Godot assets store, Godot game engine would get the following changes:
The current assets library integrated in the engine would get replaced by a new one.
Global Addons: Ability to install Godot-wide plugins that are present on any project you create.
Asset updater
Better GDScript and C# interoperability
ALL CHANGES I HAVE LISTED AREN'T YET ADDED BUT ARE OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED BY THE TEAM OF GODOT HERE > GODOT ASSETS STORE ROADMAP
