A quick poll for the general public!

What are your experiences with BAKING and how might someone get started if they have zero prior knowledge?

As much or as little information is welcome to be contributed! Assume I am starting from absolutely nothing! Because I am. The last time I tried to use a stove ...let’s just say I wasn’t allowed in the kitchen for a week.

Thank you in advance for your time!

Get lessons from my sensei. Makoto-sensei may as well be a gourmet chef.

Also, what is this for?

I did become quite the hand at cooking over an open fire but I'm afraid I have not tried my hand at baking.

I would very much like to do so in the future.

cool username!

[Yeah, he has no clue it's Dipper. He just recognizes that it's a bear constellation.]

i've been baking a lot here
i did it back home but not as much
it's some identity reassuring biz
when i started doing it i stuck to simpler recipes
ones that are hard to screw up

I mean, that depends. Are you baking savory, or sweet? Sweet stuff, the really GOOD stuff, takes a little bit of trial and error, Baking savory can too, but usually your prep throughout kind of pushes things along.

A lot of it is just following directions, but if you get really good at it you can guesstimate how much or little of something you put in!

I have a friend that would be able to help you. She enjoys baking and I'm pretty sure would enjoy answering any questions that you have.

If you're looking to learn on your own, following an easy recipe for something like cookies is a good way to start. The recipe should tell you everything you need.

Baking is actually one of the easier things to do because the recipes are so detailed, and the measurements are more exact.

I would say to...try with basics first? You know like working with the ingredients by themselves than trying to bring them together to make something else.

Cooking of any kind is half culinary skills and half based on proper measurements.

But keeping you out of the kitchen just won't do! The only way to get better is by making mistakes!

Tablespoon and teaspoon are two different things.

Salt and sugar look almost identical.

Always add the poison after you finish baking, not before. Otherwise it evaporates and you have to sit there awkwardly while your intended victim eats three pieces of cake and still hasn't dropped dead yet.

[Someone please keep Azazel from giving the youth anymore tips on anything ever.]

Baking? I know how to bake some things. I guess we can go over simple recipes like cookies first to start with. If you come over to my place I can teach you that sort of thing to start you off?

Precision is everything. Baking's trickier than normal cooking since it involves more chemical reactions, so anything that's just a little bit off can mess up what you're making.

If you can manage to find one here, a kitchen scale is really useful for getting things exact. Measuring spoons are also good, but it's sometimes easy to scoop out too much or too little with them. A food processor is really useful for both baking and regular cooking, too.

I see a lot of people have recommended cookies, but brownies are a pretty easy thing to start with too. One of the first things you want to do though is to make sure that you have the right type of dish or pan for what you want to cook.

If you have problems with a stove though there are plenty of no-bake recipes that you could try as well though that are pretty good. I could give you a few of those to try too.

just get the cookie dough that comes in a tube
all you have to do is slice it and stick it in the oven
it's super easy

or eat it raw
but you could get salmonella that way

It seems like you've got a lot of good advice that I hope will ensure you never get banned from the kitchen in a week.

But one tip? Never look away. Constant vigilance. Your eyes should remain on your baked goods at all times.
