Twenty years ago tomorrow, I posted on this account (on LiveJournal) for the first time.

Here was my first post:

Um, occurred to me I might introduce myself here. I'm a slash junkie. You can call me Dee. I'm mid-thirties, two young boys, and a husband who doesn't get the appeal of slash at all but is supportive if it gets him more sex. (Sometimes yes, sometimes no.)

I can only really write when the muse (mania) hits, so this journal will be a sporadic thing, I'm sure.

Well, the "sporadic" didn't happen for a few years, as 2006-2008 was an amazingly fannishly productive period of time. (2006: 111,599 words of fic in 6 months; 2007: 148,869 words; 2008: 105,707 words)

Still have the husband, the two boys (Kid the Elder and Kid the Younger, now both old enough to legally drink, though they don't), and the passion for slash.

PS. I was going to post on July 5 about my first fic, providing a DVD commentary. But I didn't. Will do it at some point.

Music: I personally enjoy 1980s alternative and geek rock (They Might Be Giants, Dead Milkmen, Weezer, BNL, Devo, Paul and Storm, Jonathan Coulton) but am definitely open to other genres. I like vids that tell a story (or make a point, or tell a joke, or some combination thereof), and songs that tell a story lend themselves pretty well to that.

I was struck by the song “Dance the Night” from the first moment I heard it, watching the Margot Robbie-led Barbie movie. The lyrics capture a role that I have seen women feel forced into playing my entire life: the always-calm, charming presence made up to be beautiful who supports everyone else’s happiness, regardless of her own.

“Watch me dance, dance the night away. My heart could be burnin', but you won't see it on my face. … I'll still keep the party runnin', not one hair out of place.”

It’s a role that men rarely recognize that women are forced or pressured into taking, because society never expects men to know that. The fake concept is that women are natural hostesses and caretakers, that they all like having that role, and that it’s “just how women are.”

Bullshit.

Anyway, “Dance the Night” is a banger of a dance song, and it also has the sociopolitical thread running through its lyrics.

At a watch party, and so far the themes we've identified for Festivids this year are: thighs, cats, and bears, ETA: and #teamwhale (Christine totally counts as a whale by the way) and girls/women with swords. Will update this post as more become apparent.

Next point: The Festivids vids about Moby Dick are way more awesome than the book because they pull out and explore the interesting themes without the sexism, self-absorption, racism, and boring droning details of the book.

Next point: I have decided some sources are "experience the canon through vids" sources for me. Example- Wheel of Time. Not that it's bad, just that the vids are pretty awesome and I can save time. <3 <3 <3

He's handsome; he's weird; all his pop culture references are from the 1970s. I'm 100% convinced he's autistic (one of us). The Tumblrinas have declared him gender goals. Perhaps some of that is how he can't grow good-looking facial hair?

I sincerely love him AND I enjoy mocking his foibles, which are many. There's not a lot of RPF footage of him because he's a homebody and he doesn't like working. Here is a YouTube playlist of publicly available interviews, behind-the-scenes videos, etc. and my stash of pictures. I really like two moments from the House MD Swan Song video Hugh Laurie made (6:17 RSL cuddling up to Hugh's stand-in and 28:55 RSL's pants with dogs on them) which is available for purchase on YouTube and not in other places such as people's stashes of pictures. The Festivids mods have said you can also use footage from his works to supplement, so here's his IMDB. bironic knows the extent of my obsession fannish interest.

BREAKING NEWS: Brand new video of him 12/18/23, which I've only seen in GIF form. He is losing his hair but not his fondness for out-of-date pop culture references; I LOVE HIM SO MUCH.

Ode to Joy (2019) [SAFETY] - Cute romcom with an interesting (if a bit farfetched) neurodivergence plot.* Melissa Rauch is hilarious. Really open to anything, but I'm very curious what happened after the movie ended, so if you want to crossover with other Martin Freeman works (Breeders?) and Morena Baccarin works (Deadpool?) to show that, I would be forever in your debt. *OK, having An Emotion does not literally make me or perhaps anyone pass out/shut down. But having to manage your life extremely closely or otherwise Too Much is very relatable.

Overboard (1987) [SAFETY] - Does this movie make you squeal with delight? YOU, ME, AND REESE WITHERSPOON! (Did you see her shout-out to the movie at the Oscars? Awesome!) This movie is cute and sweet and funny and adorable, with a fun amnesia subplot! And, it's got major, disturbing consent issues (including forced servitude) AND it acknowledges that. A straight-up Dean/Annie romance vid would not work for me, nor would an "excusing Dean" vid. But there are still so many possibilities for chosen-family or who-am-I stories to tell.

Watson and Holmes (Comics) - In awe of anyone who can vid comics, so your idea will be better than mine!

The Mysterious Benedict Society (TV) - The styling of this show fascinates me; it's such its own unique world. That's what would appeal most in a vid -- focus on the visuals and how they are telling a story of their own.

Sliders (TV) - All the AUs! Parallel universes! The mpreg episode and the one where they bring up selfcest! Real-life brothers play fictional brothers who were separated at birth! I can't stand the Kromaggs/war subplot that took over the whole show zzzzzzzz; would love a vid looking at the "leap of the week" / multiverse aspect instead.

They're in the Loft; House has moved out. Wilson in bathrobe. House in full clothes.

House is annoyed with the renovation job that is ongoing. Thinks it looks terrible. "It's not even finished."

"He's not done yet," Wilson protested.

House braced a hand on the back of the sofa. "He's screwing you over!"

Wilson's eyes widened for a brief instant, then went back to normal as he crossed the room to stand near House. "Javier's a good contractor, highly recommended. Just because things with my project aren't going to your schedule--"

"What's going on here?" asked House.

Hip against the couch, other hip covered yet again by a hand, Wilson replied mulishly, "You're trying to take over things in my life. Again."

"Deflection. There's something you're not telling me."

The moment stretched out between them, Wilson defiant and House determined, neither budging an inch. An echo solved the standoff.

"Baby, have you seen my socks? I have to go," came a voice down the hallway, and Wilson's eyes shut. House turned toward the hall doorway, and confirmed that, yes, Wilson was apparently getting screwed over.

Over the sofa, most likely.

"Hi, House," Javier called blithely before heading over to the kitchen island and stealing a bite of Wilson's toast.

Wilson ducked around House and crouched low to the floor. "Under the couch," he said, and emerged with a pair of patterned dress socks. Smoothing them out and folding them together, he walked in a lazy trajectory to meet Javier in the doorway to the foyer.

Honest, he said that in the most joking way possible. Maybe it doesn't come across here, but RSL was very funny and laughed a lot during the interview. It was honestly one of the most enjoyable interviews I've ever done."

Here's the text of my interview with "House's" Robert Sean Leonard, who plays Dr. James Wilson. He may be the only actor in Hollywood who doesn't want his role to get bigger. And who wants nothing more than to do Tom Stoppard plays in New York and hang out with his fiance. But anyway, on with the show...

Do you watch the show much?

"I can't watch it. I mean, Hugh doesn't watch it because he's anal and … eight years old. [laughs] And by the way, I don’t buy it, I think he does watch it.

“I watched in the first year. We live in New York and [my fiancé] was in California] and she likes it because I’m on it. But then she left, she had to come back to New York, and what are you going to do? The idea of me watching myself on TV, alone in Santa Monica, was just about.. just short of, like, a bottle of Maker’s Mark and a shotgun away from shooting myself. [much laughter] So I haven’t watched it all season. But when I have watched it, I’ve been mildly confused and Hugh is appropriately grumpy."
