EXCLUSIVE: With the four actors set to play the iconic members of the super team, Marvel Studios‘ The Fantastic Four now has its sights set on who will play Silver Surfer, and it looks like they are going with one of the towns biggest rising stars.
Sources tell Deadline that Emmy winner Julia Garner is set to play the iconic comic book character in Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four. Pedro Pascal will play Reed Richards (aka Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby is Sue Storm (aka the Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn is Johnny Storm (aka the Human Torch) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach is Ben Grimm (aka the Thing).

WandaVision helmer Matt Shakman is directing Fantastic Four off a script by Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan, Eric Pearson and Ian Springer. Production will begin this summer, and the film is set to bow on July 25, 2025.

While plot details for this film are unknown, sources say Garner will play Shalla-Bal, a version of Silver Surfer from the comics.
Garner’s star has been on the rise ever since she won her first of three Emmys for playing Ruth on the Netflix crime drama Ozark. She also landed an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Anna Delvey on the limited series Inventing Anna.
Since the end of Ozark, Garner has built out her film slate starting with the recently released The Royal Hotel. Next up she has the Blumhouse and Universal pic Wolfman, in which she will star opposite Christopher Abbott, and also has the Paramount thriller Apartment 7A.

Julia is a fine actress. I am a fan. One reason MARVEL STUDIOS succeeded so well initially from IRON MAN on… (Thank You Paramount) Is because they didn’t try to fix what was not broken. They showed great respect for the source material, bringing in massive numbers of fans, many of whom skewed demographically older… Fans who grew up on MARVEL COMICS the way I did. They wanted to see their childhood heroes finally brought to life filmically with modern technology and fine casts. They need to lay the foundation before they evolve their characters away from what made them successful, yet they also need to keep current. THE FANTASTIC FOUR and THE SILVER SURFER are MAJOR fan favorites over the years. This will not be the FIRST Fantastic Four movie. They’ve played with the formula several times. Tone is crucial to the series… The sense of Family and adventure must be maintained… I welcome JULIA WARNER to the MARVEL UNIVERSE… I hope NORRIN RADD will join SHALLA BAL… and bring his BOARD with him!

It is in fact canon to the comic books. Had you actually read them, you would have known that
Shall-Bal has only has 4 pages over a 2 issue span (in 60 years). She’s not the Silver Surfer, she’s not even a secondary character, but a minor character in a what if series.
There’s only one Silver Surfer and even the casual FF fans know who HE is.
