2013 saw the coming of the Villains' Month, special decimal issues featuring villains that came after #23. It lead up to Forever Evil, an event featuring the Crime Syndicate and the Secret Society of Super-Villains.
Superman returned to the big screen with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. This film was the start of the DC Extended Universe, intended as a competitor of the widely popular Marvel Cinematic Universe which had been steadily growing since 2008.
