Or cette destination les ramenait à une appartenance des Juifs à Eretz Israël. Dans ce cas, la migration n’était donc pas une migration ordinaire : se rendre en Palestine constituait un retour symbolique (aliyah) vers une patrie d’appartenance mettant fin à la condition d’exil (galout). Si la temporalité constitue une entrée dans l’étude des migrations, elle reste souvent implicite, tant la migration est abordée sous l’angle de la rupture spatiale. Or les exilés et émigrants sont aussi soumis à des rythmes temporels qui scandent les transformations sociales auxquels ils sont soumis : tension entre synchronie et diachronie, rapport au temps des communautés migrantes, rapport à la temporalité de la part des sociétés d’accueil. Die im Auftrag Vereinigten Königreichs zwischen 1940 und 1943 stattfindende Internierung in Kanada von deutschsprachigen, meist jüdischen und jungen Flüchtlingen (daher die Bezeichnung „Camp Boys“) ist eine seltsame Randepisode des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Es ist ein Stück britisch-imperialer Geschichte, das sich auf kanadischem Boden abspielte. Es ist auch die Geschichte von Zwangsmigration und mehrfacher Internierung. Auf die Erfahrung des Exils folgte nämlich die Erfahrung der Immobilität im geopolitischen Dazwischen, während außerhalb der Lager, auf der anderen Seite des Atlantiks, der Weltkrieg wütete. Berlin se caractérise au XX e siècle tant par son histoire mouvementée et déchirée que par son statut de métropole culturelle, déjà reconnu sous la République de Weimar. Ville-vitrine de deux systèmes en concurrence durant la guerre froide, Berlin a été au coeur de nombreuses batailles culturelles. Elle a ainsi hébergé une création culturelle reconnue internationalement ainsi qu'un tissu contre-culturel dynamique aux ramifications transnationales, lié aux mouvements contestataires des années 1970 et 1980. Avec la chute du mur en 1989, ce capital contre-culturel a largement été mobilisé jusqu'à devenir une marque de fabrique du Berlin réunifié des années 1990. C'est en particulier le cas de la (contre-)culture techno et des lieux emblématiques des nuits berlinoises, comme le Berghain. Avec le recul, on constate un mouvement culturel menant des marges vers le centre : existe-t-il encore une contreculture berlinoise en 2024, lorsque le moindre billet d'entrée pour un événement (même marqué comme « alternatif ») coûte 25 € ?

Since Mikhail Bakhtin’s theorisation of the chronotopos, we know that the categories of time and space are deeply inscribed in narrative texts. A chronotopos in Bakhtin’s sense conveys a genuine narrative worldview. This has implications for our reflections on Jewish exile and migration, and, more specifically, for reflections on the Israelkorpus, which consists of biographical narrative interviews. Like other experiences of exile, the Jewish exile in the 1930s was an experience of displacement, yet it also meant a shift in the understanding of time and history. Migration to Mandatory Palestine/Israel meant, for Jews, a symbolic and mythical ‘return’ to another, mythical time. Parallelen zwischen unterschiedlichen Exil- und Migrations-Paradigmen ziehen? Einerseits das Exil vor dem Nationalsozialismus nach 1933, andererseits das innerdeutsche Exil, also die Übersiedlung von Ost nach West nach 1945? In beiden Fällen stand die Dialektik zwischen Transit und Verankerung im Mittelpunkt eines Prozesses, der dem Exil einen (politischen, individuellen, künstlerischen) Sinn verlieh. Über den Verlust hinaus ist die Ent-Ortung produktiv, da sie Perspektiven der Dezentrierung/ Neuzentrierung, der Verankerung und Neuverankerung eröffnet, die ein anderes Sehen und Fühlen ermöglichen. Das Exil dringt somit tief in die Kunst und in das Leben ein. Es durchdringt die Materie des Werks, seine Struktur und sogar seine Färbung. In diesem Sinne erscheinen Kunst und Literatur als Mittel, tiefgreifende menschliche Mechanismen der Ent-Ortung zu verstehen. %X Is there any virtue in “comparing the incomparable”, i.e. in comparing different paradigms of exile and migration: on the one hand, the anti-Nazi exile after 1933; on the other hand, the German East-to-West migration, i.e. the crossing of the inter-German border? In both cases, the dialectics between transit and anchoring is at the heart of a process that gave (political, individual, artistic) meaning to exile. Beyond loss, displacement is productive in that it opens up perspectives of decentring/ centring, logics of anchoring and re-anchoring, which make us see and feel differently. Exile thus infuses the very depths of art and life. It permeates the material of the work, but also its structure, and, more subtly even, its colouring. In this sense, art and literature appear as means of knowledge of deep human mechanisms of displacement. %X Y a-t-il une vertu à « comparer l’incomparable », c’est-à-dire à comparer entre eux des paradigmes différents de l’exil et de la migration : celui, antinazi, d’après 1933, et celui de l’« Est à l’Ouest », c’est-à-dire la traversée de la frontière interallemande ? Dies führte zu einer Zerstörung und Zerstreuung der Institutionen des deutschsprachigen Judentums, seiner Kulturstätten und seiner Erinnerung. Archive sind einerseits feste Orte der Bewahrung, spiegeln andererseits auch fragmentierte Überlieferungen wider. Wie lassen sich die Zerstörung und Zerstreuung des deutschen Judentums dokumentieren? Wie kann man Brüche archivieren? In vorliegendem Artikel wird versucht, diese archivwissenschaftlichen Fragen auf ein besonderes Archiv zu übertragen: das im Rahmen des von Anne Betten geleiteten Projekts entstandenen „Israelkorpus“. Et que ce n’était pas prêt d’arriver, grommelions-nous, pour peu que le sujet de thèse fût situé hors des domaines de l’espace public, de l’État et de la classe ouvrière masculine – pré carré et zone de confort des garçons. Et cela ne tenait pas non plus à l’absence de femmes en cycle doctoral. Les doctorantes au CCCS travaillaient sur des sujets comme les magazines féminins, les subcultures de filles, l’amour romantique, les comics pour filles ou la culture des femmes de classe ouvrière, pour n’en citer que quelques-uns. A new historiography about the world wars, however, favouring the study of “war cultures”, broke down barriers that seemed hermetic: “front”/“rear”, men/women, victors/vanquished, and generations. The war had a profound impact on adolescent subjectivities, and still had consequences in Berlin during the November 1918 revolution. From a gender and cultural history perspective, it is relevant to look at the emotional continuities around the revolution. The article’s aim is to show how the younger generation’s “everyday” was affected (and in particular regarding everyday violence). A partir de recherches menées depuis plus de vingt ans au Canada puis en Israël, le présent article s’appuie sur l’exemple de la migration forcée de personnes juives d’Europe centrale, contraintes de fuir les persécutions nazies après 1933. Cette « migration de type divergent » (Nancy L. Green) mena des Juifs germanophones vers diverses régions anglophones du monde, en particulier vers des régions entretenant des liens étroits avec l’Empire britannique, comme le Canada et la Palestine sous mandat britannique. Dans ces deux contextes pourtant très différents, les immigrants juifs furent confrontés à un ethos de la « conquête de civilisation » recourant à de fortes injonctions genrées. La masculinité en particulier, et l’ethos du corps sain, apte à travailler et à conquérir, furent l’un des vecteurs de l’intégration des nouveaux arrivants. Dans ces deux con-textes, le recours transnational à la notion d’« able-bodied man » servit à renforcer des hiérarchies entre soi et « les autres ». Or les immigrants juifs venus d’Allemagne ou d’Autriche avaient eux-mêmes, à leur corps défendant, fait l’expérience d’une exclusion et d’une persécution reposant sur des critères de race et de genre. Ils ne pouvaient qu’être sensibles à ce que leur nouvelle destination d’accueil attendait d’eux. En effet, la réunification allemande, marquée par la chute du Mur en 1989, a ouvert la voie à un réagencement du public et du privé. Par ailleurs, les arrangements de genre et de sexualité à l'intérieur des deux Allemagnes (1949-1990) succédaient à l'obsession nazie pour la sexualité et l'intime, instruments d'une « mise au pas » totale et totalitaire de la sphère privée. Cette migration des années 1930 est parfois appelée «cinquième aliyah» dans l’historiographie israélienne. Pour ces personnes, l’adaptation post-migratoire fut complexe : la migration représenta une rupture importante, affectant tant les liens sociaux que l’identité culturelle et les représentations genrées. Relationnelle, multidimensionnelle et intersectionnelle, l’histoire des masculinités intègre différentes formes de domination : domination des hommes sur les femmes, domination de certains hommes sur d’autres hommes, mais aussi rapports de domination sociale et raciale. Ce sont ces intersections sociales complexes, ainsi que l’influence des différentes formes de nationalisme (du nationalisme antisémite exacerbé en Allemagne jusqu’au projet sioniste) sur l’injonction à agir «en homme», qui sont au cœur de l’ouvrage.Après le nazisme et la Shoah, il est devenu difficile de penser ensemble identité juive et allemande. Par bien des aspects pourtant, les Juifs germanophones en Palestine/Israël (désignés par le terme yekkes) ont maintenu une identité distincte. L’un des défis fut de satisfaire aux exigences du programme genré du sionisme, marqué par une obsession de la régénérescence virile et un état de guerre quasi-permanent, conduisant à survaloriser les conduites martiales. L'aphorisme souligne le lien entre identité personnelle et incorporation de la nourriture, mais il invite aussi à penser l'expérience culinaire comme une pratique ritualisée. Les arts et délices de la table impliquent en effet des gestes, des normes et des valeurs spécifiques faisant de la cuisine un art performatif. De plus, cuisiner et consommer reflètent et façonnent des structures de pouvoir symboliques, notamment des hiérarchies socio-genrées. Ces actes reflètent également un statut social et des affiliations culturelles. Et dans le même temps, les arts de la table ouvrent un espace pour des pratiques résistantes voire subversives de la vie quotidienne, telles que les décrivait Michel de Certeau dans sa sociologie des « arts de faire » : dans la cuisine, on « bricole » avec sa propre identité et on « braconne » constamment des affiliations culturelles. Indeed, unlike its southern neighbour, Canada in the 1930s offered limited opportunities for immigration. Approximately 6,000 German-speaking refugees (Jews and non-Jews) were allowed in. This figure includes about 1,000 ‘enemy aliens’ (most of whom were refugees) who had been interned in the United Kingdom in 1940 and then transferred to the Dominion of Canada. Several recent publications have put the “‘Land der begrenzten Unmöglichkeiten’”, the “land of limited impossibilities” (as one of my interviewees once put it), on the map of exile studies. In this paper, I shall focus on the German-speaking Jews (Yekkes) who found refuge in Canada, in order to show how they positioned themselves within the Jewish community in Canada and whether they created and transmitted a form of collective yekkish memory; how they perceived and positioned themselves within a transnational space linking Montreal and Toronto to London, New York and Jerusalem. For thirty years, the concept has been used to write German-Jewish history. Looking back at this historiography that crosses the history of the German-speaking world and Jewish studies, this article shows that “gender” has shed new light on major issues in the history of Jews in the German-speaking world between 1867 and 1933, particularly the dynamics of assimilation/dissimilation, and the entry into the modern bourgeoisie. “Gender” also emphasizes the “agency” of Jewish women and men who, in their daily negotiation of a German belonging, also remained distinctly Jewish. Numerous studies have stressed the “great contribution” of German-speaking Jews to the construction of Israeli society, but little research has yet been conducted which places this migration in its Middle Eastern context. In view of the recent interest in the gendered aspects within German-Jewish history – including issues of masculinity – the time is ripe to focus on the interactions between German-Jewish immigrants (‘Yekkes’) and their Middle Eastern environment – especially their Arabic neighbours – before and after the war of 1948 and the “partition” of Palestine. This article, which is based on autobiographical accounts and oral history interviews conducted in the early 1990s, focuses on the narratives of man-to-man “close encounters” with the Arabs. The image of the masculinity of local Arabs appears ambivalent. The article shows that by confronting “Orientalistic” clichés with retrospective interpretative work, the narratives told by (male) Yekkes constructed “fluid” masculine identities which sought to assert their distinctiveness and to receive restrospective historical legitimation. Seit einigen Jahren zeigt sich ein reges historisches Interesse für die Jeckes und deren Beitrag zum Aufbau Israels. Diese neue Jeckes-Historiografie findet zeitgleich mit einer Hinterfragung der „großen zionistischen Erzählung“ in Israel statt. Besonders soll auf den wirtschaftlichen Aspekt dieser Meistererzählung eingegangen werden. Der Artikel stützt sich auf Lebenserzählungen und lebensgeschichtliche Interviews mit deutschsprachigen Israelis. Auffällig ist in diesen Selbstzeugnissen die Anzahl von Erfolgsgeschichten, die eine (männlich konnotierte) Figur des pionierhaften Entrepreneurs narrativ konturieren. Retrospektive Narrative von individuellem Wirtschaftserfolg des Israel Style-Unternehmers mit Pioniergeist und Entrepreneurqualitäten dienen also zur kollektiven (Wieder-)Erlangung eines jeckischen Stolzes. Cette politique au quotidien est attachée à des lieux précis, par exemple le quartier de Kreuzberg SO 36. Le mouvement des occupations d'immeubles au tournant des années 1970 et 1980 répondait à un problème social et aux manquements de la politique en matière d'urbanisme menée jusque-là. Les occupants ont repensé la ville comme un ensemble d'espaces multiples, produits par des usages sociaux soumis à des rapports de pouvoir. Malgré d'importantes dissensions internes, ils partageaient, outre une sociologie et des modes de vie communs, un répertoire politique, des formes d'action et un langage radical. L’espace de l’exil et de la migration est donc un espace construit où interagissent, notamment, les représentations héritées de « là-bas » et les représentations acquises « ici ». Les narrations produites par l’expérience d’une vie dans la post-migration (histoire orale) gagnent être (re)lues sous l’angle de la spatialité. Le présent article interroge la manière dont un espace d’exil se constitue par la narration. Les féministes visaient à explorer l'histoire de leur propre mouvement dans une perspective identificatrice. Malgré ces débuts prometteurs, la recherche française sur les féminismes allemands restait, à l'aube du XXe siècle, toutefois lacunaire. Le présent ouvrage s'inscrit dans le renouveau historiographique qui caractérise actuellement l'histoire des femmes et du genre. La naissance d'un mouvement de revendication des droits des femmes est l'héritage, dans les pays de langue allemande, de la révolution de 1848, qui a vu émerger des figures féministes " pionnières ". La " question de femmes " a ensuite sans cesse été reconfigurée par les grandes idéologies politiques traversant l'époque, à l'exemple du libéralisme, du nationalisme ou du socialisme. Si l'historiographie s'est longtemps contentée de distinguer différentes " vagues " de féministes, ce volume met en avant l'histoire complexe et imbriquée des associations et des lieux de sociabilités féministes. L'accent est également mis sur la présence de réseaux de personnes, qui se structurent à plusieurs niveaux : à l'échelle locale, nationale et internationale. Mieux encore, cette catégorie d'analyse "voyageuse" se reconfigure sans cesse au gré des transferts transatlantiques et des appropriations disciplinaires qu'elle connaît. Le présent volume aborde différentes formes de narration contemporaine, de la fiction ou au film a l'entretien clinique ou au récit de vie. Il est né de la volonté de croiser, autour du problème de la narration genrée, cette réalité française " décalée " avec des perspectives développées plus tôt dans la recherche germanophone sur le genre. Les études sur la narration ouvrent un large champ d'exploration et d'expérimentation des identités. Dans le sillage du Performative Turn, il devient possible de penser le genre comme l'un des éléments constitutifs de l'acte narratif. Le genre est le résultat d'un dire qui est, dans le même temps, un faire. Dire " je suis femme/homme ", c'est en partie se constituer en tant que tel-le. La narration de l'identité de genre apparaît alors comme une éternelle refiguration, c'est-à-dire une manière signifiante pour soi d'arranger et d'agencer son récit de soi pour les autres. Pour beaucoup, l'" exil " n'est pas resté un état provisoire, mais s'est transformé en une émigration durable. Si les Etats-Unis ont fait l'objet de nombreuses études sur l'acculturation des exilés, le Canada était en revanche encore largement ignoré, notamment parce qu'il n'a pas accueilli de personnalités emblématiques, mais plutôt des personnes " ordinaires "... aux parcours de vie extraordinaire. Entre 1933 et 1940, moins de 6 000 exilés au total ont pu entrer au Canada, qui pratiquait alors un politique très restrictive en matière d'immigration. Le présent ouvrage est ancré dans la micro-histoire et la sociologie des migrations. Il a pour objectif de comprendre les processus d'acculturation et les modalités de redéfinition identitaire chez des exilés qui se sont trouvés pris dans un réseau d'interactions culturelles croisées, entre les attentes de la société d'accueil, celles des communautés ethnoculturelles au Canada et les sociabilités héritées de la Heimat. Non seulement l'auteur a rassemblé des sources d'archives variées, notamment dans des fonds canadiens, mais il a également rencontré les exilés eux-mêmes. Among them was a group of approximately 1,000 men, mostly anti-Nazi (and often Jewish) refugees in Great-Britain, who had been interned as “enemy aliens” by the Churchill government. These men were often young, hence their designation as “Camp Boys.” Their often forgotten story, an episode of British history on Canadian soil, exemplifies the chaotic state of the world during World War Two. It is also the story of consecutive migrations and multiple internments (Nazi concentration camps, British and Canadian internment camps), a paradoxical story in which internment itself leads to forced migration. %X Cet article est issu d’une analyse micro-historique de l’acculturation au Canada des exilés, ces migrants germanophones ayant fui l’Allemagne nazie entre 1933 et le début de la guerre (Farges 2006-b) . Parmi ces derniers se trouvait un groupe d’environ 1 000 internés . L’internement par le Canada mais pour le compte de la Grande-Bretagne entre 1940 et 1943 d’hommes allemands et autrichiens, réfugiés, jeunes pour beaucoup (d’où la désignation de « Camp Boys »), Juifs pour la plupart, est l’un des épisodes les plus incongrus de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il s’agit là d’un morceau d’histoire britannique qui s’est déroulée sur le sol canadien. C’est aussi l’histoire d’une suite de migrations forcées et d’internements multiples (camps de concentration nazis, camps d’internement britanniques puis canadiens).
