GitLab: Group vs Project

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
I am setting-up a self-managed instance of GitLab and am wondering how to structure a new development project (I have used GitLab as a developer, but never as an administrator).

It seems like the top-level entity can either be a group or a project, with individual projects for services, interfaces, etc. below them.  Can any offer any advise or references to best practices?

I'm hosting my own Git repos, and the software I use doesn't support grouping (I don't think). But for simple stuff, a stand-alone project should suffice.

The advantage of grouping related projects would be for things that have multiple configurations. For example, basic Tomcat, Tomcat-in-a-container, things like that.
