お久しぶりです! 　大きなニュースがあります！
Hey! Long time no see, I have some big news for you!

最近福岡市カワイイ区の区長になりましたよ！
I recently became the new mayor of Kawaii Ward in Fukuoka City!

おや？ もう知っているって！？
What! What do you mean you already know!?

たしかに、ニュースや新聞やネットの記事にもなっていましたもんね。
I see. It was all over the news, in news papers, and on net blogs already.

自分のブログ更新するのに遅いってことか。
I’m pretty slow in updating my blog. Haha.

でも、まだカワイイ区のことをご存知で無い方もいると思います。
But I think there are lots of people who still don’t know about Kawaii-ku.

なので、この間の記者会見の時の写真を載せると同時に、
So, while I show some pictures from last week’s press conference,

カワイイ区のことについてちょっとお話したいと思います。
I’d like to talk a little bit about Kawaii-ku.

福岡市は、１５歳から２９歳までの若者の人口が、全国で最も多い市です。
Statistics show that Fukuoka City has the highest concentration of young people aged 15-29 in Japan.

その中で、女性比率が一番多い都市です。
And in that bracket, women are prominent.

そのためか、福岡市は、美容室の数も、サロンやエステのお店の数もニッポン1⃣。
And because of that, there are more hairdressers, beauty salons and esthetics in Fukuoka than anywhere else.

または福岡の女性は、美容に使うお金も日本ーらしいです。
Furthermore, women in Fukuoka spend more money on “beauty” than anywhere else in Japan.

と言う訳で、カワイイ区は福岡市の八番目の区になります。
And so Kawaii-ku is the official eighth district in Fukuoka City.

カワイイ文化は、経済的にも福岡に貢献している為、作られました。

It was created to acknowledge this thriving “cute” culture that exists in Fukuoka.

そして福岡の「カワイイ」文化をサポートする為だけではなく、
「カワイイ」が好きな方をサポートするために作られました。
It was also created to not only support the “cute culture”,
but to support those who support the culture as well.

とはいっても、ネット上にしか存在してないです。
BUT…. it only exists online.

区民が、ネットで登録すると、福岡市役所にいけば住民票もらえます。
If you register online, you can get a “jyumin-hyo” (residence certificate) at Fukuoka City Hall.

だけどカワイイ区に家を立てることができません。（笑)
But you can’t buy a house in “Kawaii-ku” or anything.

登録すると特別なイベント情報やクーポンなどを貰えるという特典があります。
Registrants receive special information about events or coupons to use in the city.

だけどカワイイは、見た目に限ることではないと、私的に思います。
But if you ask me, “kawaii” isn’t just defined by what’s on the outside.

自分がいいと思ったもの、気に入ったものによって、個性がでるからです。
Depending on what you like, and the things you enjoy, your personality is defined.

人それぞれで、カワイイと思った物は違ったりすると思います。
I think what is defined as “cute” varies from person to person.

たとえば、これがカワイイと思っている人がいれば・・・
For example, there are some people who might think this is cute:

こちらのほうがカワイイと思っている人もいる！（私を含めて・・・っていうか私だけかも）
But there might be people who find this to be even cuter:   (okay, maybe it’s just me?)

とにかく自分の好きなものを楽しんで選ぶことも、個性を作ることも、
「カワイイ」のエッセンスであるとは、私は思っています。
In any case, I think being able to have fun choosing what you like,
and developing your own style, is the essence of “kawaii”.

そしてその想いで、私は福岡市、カワイイ区の区長になりました。
And it is with this thought, that I accepted the position of “Mayor” of “Kawaii-ku” in Fukuoka City.

カワイイ区を、性別や年齢問わずに誰でも楽しめるように頑張りたいと思います。
I want to make Kawaii-ku a fun concept for everybody who wants to be involved, no matter age, or gender.

福岡市の情報を配信し、人のためになる情報も自ら配信したいです。
I don’t only want to spread information about Fukuoka, but information that will be helpful to people.

正直言うと、今までやっていたこととそんなに変わらないと思います。
Actually, I don’t think it’ll be too different from what I already do.

ただ、趣味だけじゃなくなって、もっと責任をもって、
コンテンツをちゃんと作るように頑張ります。
It’s just now, rather than it being just a hobby,
it is now part of my responsibility to create proper content for you.

ちなみに、記者会見はとてもいい体験でした。
By the way, the press conference was a really neat experience.

普段カメラに向かって喋る私ですが、
Usually I just sit at home and talk to my own camera,

今回は、何１０人のカメラの前でに立って喋りました。
This time, I talked in front of MANY cameras at once.

とても緊張しましたし、実は喋った記憶も殆どないです。
I was really nervous, and I don’t even remember most of what I said.

だけど、記者会見の動画は、福岡市がYouTubeに乗せていますので、
興味ある人は、その動画で、私の緊張している姿が見えます。♫
But luckily Fukuoka City has uploaded the entire thing on YouTube,
so you can catch me being nervous if you really want to.

私からどんな景色だったのかというと、これでした。
In case you’re wondering why I’d be nervous, this is what I was looking at:

世界のどこからでも、「kawaiiku.jp」にてカワイイ区の区民になれます。
You can register for Kawaii-ku from anywhere in the world, at kawaiiku.jp。

今のところ、県外や、海外の登録者の情報や役に立つ情報は少ないですが、
Right now, there isn’t much there for foreign, or even non-residents of Fukuoka, but

それを近いうちに変えれるように頑張ります。
We’ll be working to change that.

または、福岡市内のイベントなどに行ったりしますので、近くにいる方に会える機会があると思います。
Also I’ll be attending events around the city, so I will have a chance to meet some of you.
