Jenn rants about school and comic books, both of which are serious business.

I'm totally awesome beacause I already made friends in University.

Which is REALLY GOOD, because I won't actually be able to SPEND that excess Student Loan money until... the week after next week. -__-;; Which totally bodes well for my InfoTech course in which most of our assignments are on the CD that comes with our text book. THANK YOU, UNIVERSITY *EYEROLL*

So yeah, it's totally good that I have friends... who can lend me their textbooks. MWAHAHAHA. No, I'm kidding. I'm not really that heartless. Really!

BUT AT LEAST OUR SCHOOL LIBRARY KICKS ASS. Oh, it kicks ass so hard. I'm a total geek so I went and took out some HISTORY BOOKS. FOR FUN. BECAUSE I AM AWESOME (Middle Eastern history, if you were wondering. which you probably weren't). Hey, look at me everyone! I'm kind of in a good mood! This is beautiful because yesterday I wanted to lapse into a long term coma lawl lawl lawl. XDDDD

And you don't escape today without me ranting a little bit about comic books. La la la.

I think a big part of the reason I'm digging DC so much right now is because of the powerful feeling of Generation that it has. Marvel made it's mark with young characters and groundbreaking story-telling, however DC has a different kind of advantage garnered from it's more iconic characters. What I mean is this:

There are three distinct generations in the DC Universe:

The "Great Ones": Being, obviously, Supes, Batman, Wonder Woman and all their Silver Age JLA team-mates- Aquaman, Barry, Ollie, Hal (the old skool Flash, Green Arrow, Green Lantern), the Black Canary, Jon Jo'nzz, ect.

The "Lost Generation": Being the first wave of sidekicks and the original Teen Titans. This generation has probably gotten more crap heaped on them than anyone else in the DCU by *far*. What's really interesting, however, is that although they are for all intents and purposes the symbolic "children" of the Great DC Superheros in one way or another, none of them have ever been considered as heir to their respective titles except for Wally West (who, of course, became the third flash after the original Crisis, BUT WHO CARES ABOUT HIM he's no Bart). Almost all of them struggled with some pretty heavy problems (rape, heroine addiction, DEATH AND RESURRECTION, failed marriages, the list goes on and on and on...), but eventually forged superhero personas of their own. The core of this generation is, of course, the Golden/Silver age sidekicks: Dick Grayson (Robin/Nightwing), Donna Troy (Wonder Girl/Troia), Roy Harper (Speedy/Arsenal), Garth (Aquaboy/Tempest) and Wally West (Kid Flash/Flash III).

The Heir Apparents: Being the current "teenagers" of the DCU. It all started with Tim Drake, third Robin and professional stalker who then blackmailed himself into an awkward friendship with Kon-El, Superboy. Eventually Bart Allen (Impulse/Kid Flash II/Flash IV) was thrown into the mix and the three forged the GREATEST SUPERHERO TEAM ON EARTH (also known as 'Young Justice') that attracted teenage heroes from all over. For whatever reason, it's this Generation that's assumed to be the next coming of the Justice League in a good ten to fifteen years.

The Odd People Out: Of course, the first people who fall into this category are the 90's Green Arrow (Connor Hawke) and Green Latern (the one who's not black, and not a dick), but there's also DC "black sheep" such as Huntress or Jason Todd (T__T) who simply never had the chance to work themselves into any of the generational social "cliques". Babs also kind of lands herself here considering Batgirl was never really connected to any of the DC Teens besides Dick, and the Oracle operates at the Justice League level.

So what's my point? While Marvel tries it's very best to work it's superhero mythos into as realisitc a setting as they possibly can (ALL THINGS CONSIDERED), attempting to create a believable political atmosphere and changing it's heroes constantly to suit the times, DC sort of revels in the stark differences between the 50's and the 90's. You get this real feeling that there was a GLORIOUS GOLDEN AGE in the DCU that crashed, *hard*, around the time Roy got addicted to heroine, Jason died and crime fighting just wasn't that fun anymore (those pesky sidekicks). It's in the way the Justice League has this huge political division (Hawkman attacking the Green Arrow's "bleeding heart liberal ways", for example), or the way that no one tries to deny that Dick really said stuff like: "Holy flying nuns, Batman! Golly gee!" (rather they blame EVERY STUPID NAME IN THE CONTINUITY on him. I bet it was his idea to make Titans Tower into a GIANT T as well), or, y'know, the entire plots of EITHER Infinite Crisis (although I retain a good deal of irritation at the newest miniseries due to UNECESSARY CHARACTER DEATH OMG).

It's just strange that I avoided DC so passionately when I was young, and these days I think I like it almost MORE than Marvel (although nothing will ever replace X-Men in my heart ♥). *shrug* Neither one is better, they just do things differently. And it's kind of funny how they always try to match each other despite being so different (DC does Knightfall, Marvel does the Clone Saga; Stan Lee throws some random pill popper off a roof, DC makes Speedy a junkie ect.).

And in the end, I think the most important thing to remember is that BOTH major comic companies are sucking right now thanks to asshole Editor in Chiefs who don't actually seem to understand the audience they're trying to appeal to (Yes, Paul, people DO like Nightwing. AND Superboy. AND the Blue Beetle. AND EVEN BOOSTER GOLD, YOU ASSHOLE; No, Joe, Spiderman does not need to divorce Mary Jane and become a swinging bachelor stop wanking off to mid-70's Peter Parker kthx). BUT WE ALWAYS HAVE THE EIGHTIES, MY FRIENDS. WE ALWAYS HAVE THE EIGHTIES.

This rant was inspired by this sequence of panels. YEAH, THAT TOTALLY MAKES SENSE! ^__^

... and one day there will be ONE aspect of my life that I don't relentlessly analyze. OH SCHOOL, GIVE MY BRAIN SOMETHING TO DO ALREADY. :( :( :(
