This is my school, my high society!
So much to talk about this week between the Alice Cooper Concert (WHICH WAS AWESOME) and the ensuing after party (where I got hit on by the very cute bassist of the band 'Crash Kelly') and Free Comic Book Day (where I scored... ahahaha, a LOT of comic books XD) and my old High School's production of...
LES MISERABLES!!!!!!
Which is what I'm going to talk about since it overwhelmed almost everything else I've done this week. Seriously, it was the greatest stage performance I have ever seen in my life. It beats the stuff I've seen at Neptune, perhaps because I'm a little biased since Les Mis (despite the very deep and personal meaning 'RENT' has in my life) tends to be 'THE' Musical for me since, like many people, it was what got me into musicals in the first place.
And oh yes, I love Victor Hugo.
ANYWAYS. The big stuff out of the way- I could not believe how deep the cast was into it for a bunch of high school students. This was the first incarnation of Les Mis that made me really feel for Marius (in fact, he was one of my favorite characters in the production, WHICH IS UNUSUAL), especially regarding his relationship with Eponine which just sparkled with honest friendship and tragedy. When Rebecca first told me that they had added a Marius/Eponine kiss Off Broadway, I thought it to be a cheap and unecessary addition (mostly pandering to fans), but oh- those two actors pulled it off beautifully. There were little details that were the special kind of fantastic you wouldn't normally expect from sixteen year olds. Like: they were REALLY good at acting dead. When they carried the convincingly post-mortem Eponine off stage, it was one of the most beautiful moments in the musical, along with the scene where they watched Gavroche get shot to death in near silence.
All of the characters were casted fantastically- the Thenardiers were a definite joy to watch, especially Monsiuer who danced and twirled all in despicible, manic glee. Eponine was more in her Lea Salonga archetype, which I definitely appreciated. Gavroche was adorable, Cosette had a gorgeous voice, Enjolras was the charismatic, emotionally voliatile dreamer I adore and Valjean...
... oh Valjean. I don't know how they got a seventeen year old boy to sound like COLM FUCKING WILKINSON. But ekjfdhskajdhlakjhtkhtkjreht. The kid's Valjean performance moved me to tears (during 'Bring Him Home', no less- which is generally my least favorite Valjean solo. Hahahaha ohmygodsoamazingtherearenowords). Either way, he brought life and sympathy and guilt and compassion and everything to the role that needed to be brought to it. He was incredible.
And then there was Javert. I think I used up all my colorful praise on Valjean, which is appropiate since there are no words to describe his performance. Apparently, that sexy, sexy man was actually a TENTH GRADER, which doesn't account for the astoundingly professional approach he took to the role. It's kind of sad that in the future when people ask me who I like better, Phillip Quast or Terrance Mann I now get to say: "neither- the best Javert I ever heard or saw was a sixteen year old boy in a High School performance." He also moved me to tears (during 'Javert's Suicide'), but it was less an emotional thing than a: "OH MY GOD WHY DOES HE EXIST FANGIRL FANGIRL FANGIRL!" sort of thing.
And as for my dear friends who were in the performance?
First of all: Craig, you were the best druken sailor who ever looked for a whore to poke your stoke. XD
And Gregory- gah, your foreman was so offensively all about the slimy sexual harassment, but somehow you managed to bring some class to the role. ^__^
Finally, Rebecca, you wonderful actress you. You wanted me to write you an eight page essay, but I'm worn out and all I can say is this: you were made for the stage. Your role was so small, but you played it with such utter conviction that it was definitely tangible. It was possible to follow your student's character arc from beginning to end- I've said this before, but my favorite moment was the way you shyly, catiously came onto stage during 'turning' and looked around nervously, hoping none of the other women would notice that YOU had been at the barricade. It was powerful, and I hope that even the people in the audience who weren't watching you noticed. ♥
And that's about all I have to say about that. XD
Since I've been tagged for this meme, I'll do it, however I refuse to tag anyone. Pass it on if you feel obligated:
Once you are tagged you MUST write an entry about 6 weird habits/things you do/odd information as well as state this rule clearly; In the end, you need to choose the next six people to be tagged and list their names.
1. I always set the microwave in internments of 33 seconds. For example, if it needs to be on for a minute I'll set it to: 1:33, if it's four minutes, 4:33. If it's less than a minute, I'll always be sure to set three as the last number (0:53). No, it doesn't make anymore sense to me than it does to you.
2. I braid my hair after every shower I take so that it has more wave/life to it during the day. My hair is extremely thin and volumizing shampoo does NOTHING for it, however I wouldn't touch a curling iron with a ten foot pole. XD
3. I always wake up in the exact same position I fell asleep in.
4. My long term memory is excellent, but I have a terrible short term memory.
5. When I'm dreaming, I am always concious of the fact that I'm in a dream. I thought this was normal until a few months ago. My dreams would probably be a lot more exciting if I could suspend my attatchment to reality. XD
6. I know the words to every english song on my 2000 song playlist, with the exceptions of those I downloaded on
fst and haven't had a real chance to listen to yet. Once again, I thought this was normal until people started looking at me crosseyed.
EDIT: ZOMG!!! THERE ARE KEYHOLES IN MY LUCKY CHARMSTM!!!! CEREAL/KINGDOM HEARTS CROSSOVER!!!! *is shot*
