Situations with which life has not equipped me to deal

I buy cheap watches, and every 6 months the strap falls apart and I have to get a new one. I go to the market or to a Timpsons-alike. This is clearly not the way to get a good watch strap. How does one go about getting a good watch strap? Where do you go, how do you identify quality watch straps, and how much do they cost? Alternatively, how much do you have to pay for a watch before you can expect the strap to last >6 months?
