Summary: Mercedes didn't know much about Sam besides his love of comic books and his dorky impressions, but she was looking forward to finding out more.
The night was cool with a slight breeze for spring weather, the perfect night for a walk. Sam and Mercedes made their way out of the gymnasium and onto the road; Rachel’s dad’s had picked her up and it seemed like she needed some time to herself so they had both insisted that they’d be fine walking.
Now they were on their way home and Mercedes was again pleasantly surprised at how easily their conversation flowed. She had never really spent much time with Sam; she knew he liked comic books and did dorky impressions sometimes, but it was great getting to know him one on one.
Except now she felt even worse about being such a bitch to him when the rumour about him hooking up with Quinn and Kurt was going around.
She had apologized before and had helped chip in to buy back his guitar, but listening to him talk and finding out more about him brought a fresh wave of guilt.
Sam seemed to sense her discomfort and instinctively touched her arm to make her stop.
“Sorry if I’m boring you, I forget that not everyone’s into Star Wars as much as I am” he said sheepishly and looked down at his feet.
“No, no!” Mercedes quickly replied, “Actually, I love those movies. My brother got me hooked on them and I haven’t looked back”. With that she started walking again and Sam followed suit.
Sam gave her a small smile and a look that she couldn’t exactly place but knew it wasn’t a bad one.
“It’s just… I feel so bad of how I treated you before Sam, I’m so sorry and-“, Mercedes started but was cut off almost immediately by Sam.
“Mercedes don’t do this to yourself! You had no idea what I was goin’ through; I probably would have reacted the same way. And you’re protective of Kurt so I get that.”
By now they had reached Mercedes’ house and were making their way up the walkway to her front door. Mercedes fumbled for her keys in her purse, mostly to stall the end to this night.
“So I uh- I had a really good time tonight Mercedes”, Sam said softly and gave her that adorable lopsided grin of his.
“Yeah I did too, thanks for giving me my Cinderella moment.”
Sam smiled and looked down; he wanted nothing more than to tell her how much fun he had and how he got butterflies when she smiled at him.
Instead he settled on an awkward “Ok, well goodnight”, and started walking back down to the road.
Mercedes watched him go, with a sad expression on her face; she had told herself before not to get her hopes up and this was completely platonic but that hadn’t stopped that stupid little voice in her head that said “Maybe, just maybe he might like me”.
She was glad that her parents were out when she walked in the door; she was in no mood for their prying questions, not right now anyway. What she needed was her pj’s, some cookies and cream ice cream, and a little Top Model.
She had just settled on her couch and was becoming increasing interested in the fight breaking out on the episode she was watching when she heard a soft knock at the door.
“Who the hell could that be at this time of the night?” she muttered to herself, as she made her way to the door. Peering somewhat cautiously through the window, she was surprised to see Sam standing there looking incredibly nervous.
Opening the door, she began “Sam what are you doing-“
“Doyouwannagooutwithme” he quickly said all in one breath.
Mercedes stood there stunned for a minute, certain she had misheard him.
“What?” she asked softly with a look of disbelief evident on her face.
“I uh- I said do you wanna go out with me,” he repeated, this time more confidently and gave her that damn lopsided grin that seemed intent on making her stomach do somersaults.
“Yes.” She said quickly, without even thinking about it (and partly so that he couldn’t take it back).
“Ok. Ok, awesome! So, I’ll call you tomorrow then.” Sam said enthusiastically, his smile getting wider as he spoke.
“Yeah that sounds great!” replied Mercedes, more than aware her smile was just as big.
“I’ll talk to you tomorrow then,” he said and turned to walk back down the walkway.
As Mercedes was closing the door, she could distinctly here Sam’s voice chanting “Yes Evans!”
She laughed to herself and as she shut the door all the way she thought “That boy was a dork but damn he was a cute one.”
