Student Union Summer
hey all,
For those of you who don't know me, I'm Jonah Goldberg, your Student Union Vice President. The Union e-board is gearing up for a summer full of working to make BU better. We have some ideas of stuff we plan on doing already. On my end, for example, I have already begun work to eliminate the Kosher Meal Plan (not the dining hall, that's good, the meal plan is a barrier - over-priced and discriminatory). Other things I will be doing this summer include getting soap and paper towels in all remaining public bathrooms that do not yet have them (ex: Warren doesn't have paper Towels, BSR doesn't have either...). I'm going to see what I can do about those Post Office shananigans (send me your horror stories so I can use them as ammo. If you have had good experiences, let me know too so I have both sides of the argument). I also plan on writing my own set of rules - "Jonah's Rules of Order," a take-off on "Roberts Rules of Order," except far less confusing, much more practical, and a hell of a lot shorter. It's only a take-off because I need a template to make sure I don't miss anything important... that and I like the title. I will also be looking into organizing a retreat for the Student Union at the beginning of the year so all the reps and e-board members can get to know the people they will be working with all year (and do some exercises of some sort too). I'll also be at Boston Intercollegiate Government meetings when they're held this summer. Not 100% sure what I'll be doing with that yet, but that's part of the fun. Another one of my goals is finding out who made the decision to not let our Women's Lacrosse Team play their NCAA Elite 8 game at home (as the #3 team in the nation playing #6 (defending champion) Virginia, BU had the right to host it, which was good since they went 13-0 at home this year). The game was scheduled for Sunday the 15th but I was told BU refused to let our amazing team play at home because they had to start setting up for graduation Thursday (12th) night. In fact, there was a rumor that the women almost didn't get to play their 1st round game at home either because it was on the 12th. BU went to UVa and dropped a heartbreaker 13-9. Oh, and btw, UVa beat Duke Fri to advance to Sunday's championship game (2:30 on CSTV if you're interested). This isn't just about the outcome of the game (I was there, and I honestly think the Terriers would've won at home, but that's besides the point), it's about pride in our sports. We're Division ONE for Pete's sake! Our school should act like it. People complain that BU's not a sports school. Well, we know who to blame now. The worst part is, BU's hosting the Final 4 and Championship next year at Nickerson. They found a way to accomodate the unknown teams for that, why not this year, when we actually had a very legit chance at our first non-ice hockey national championship? So I need to find out who made that decision, have a talk with that person or group of people, and make sure this crap never ever even gets considered again.
This is just a sample of things to come... Each e-board member has more on their agendas, though they can better tell you what those are than I.
It is all well and good that we have agendas, but I want to make sure that none of us leave out any of your concerns. We're here this summer (and all next year) to work for you. So what are your concerns? What are your ideas? Comments, suggestions, anything?
