Hi,

I've done a bit of cleaning up on the MIPS related part of the
installation guide. Mostly I have removed some old platforms which will
no longer be supported in Stretch and rewritten the supported platforms
section.

I'm not entirely sure if I've done the right thing WRT translations. At
the moment I've just left them, but maybe I should remove the relevant
files there too?

If you don't like attachments, I can resend the patches in another form
(I currently have things in git)

Thanks,
James

Someone already working on this?
Shall I look into committing it?

I'd say feel free to :)

Ideally along the way the few .xml translations should at least get the
dropping of text. The po translations should be getting very fine.

Samuel

I have committed most of the changings and synced translations where possible.

But I did not commit patch #2:

used?

Additionally, I would like to propose a changing to the supported archs table,
which currently looks this (the mips part):

I would propose to delete the "Mips Malta (64 bit)" entries from the 32bit MIPS
lines (mips and mipsel), since they are contained in the "MIPS Malta" entry
within the 64bit MIPS line.
That would lead to something like this:

There seems to have been some confusion about whether this table lists
kernel or installer flavours. As this is the installation manual, I
think it makes sense to document the latter.

Not only is there no 5kc-malta installer flavour for mips or mipsel,
there is also no armmp-lpae flavour of the installer for armel. Please
delete that as well.

Also, the versatile flavour for armel was dropped after we accidentally
broke the kernel configuration and yet received no bug reports about
it. Please delete that as well.

Finally, two of the architectures are missing documentation of their
installer flavours:

- For i386 there are default and xen installer flavours. The xen

installer flavour is needed for Xen PV domains only.
- For powerpc there are powerpc and powerpc64 installer flavours.
I believe powerpc64 is needed on all systems with 64-bit
  OpenFirmware.

Ben.

Ok, deleted in my workingcopy.

Hmm, the table has armmp-lpae only for armhf, not for armel. Do you want me
to remove that one for armhf?

Ok, deleted.

That would mean, we have to add 2 "flavor" entries for i386?
How would we name them? Some proposal below in the table ...
The "default" entries are not optimal ...

That means the same? Add to flavors for ppc64el? How to name them?
I am confused here, powerpc is no release arch anymore, right?

Yes, I meant armhf.

Yes, but I can't think how better to label it.

No, I don't mean ppc64el.  I looked at the published version of the
installation manual so I didn't see you already removed powerpc a few
hours earlier.

(Should non-release architectures really be removed completely from the
installation manual? It seems like they should be excluded from the
published versions for stable and testing, but not removed altogether.
I don't know how difficult that would be to arrange.)

This could probably be resolved by adding some additional paragraph after the
table, explaining the flavors in more detail ...

So we only need the ppc64el flavor for powerpc, right?

That removal was included in the patch from James Cowgill in this bug,
which I applied.
But you are right, powerpc content was not completely removed at other
places in the manual, but is just not used. So it would be consistent, to
re-add that entry, but out-commented.

We only need one flavour for _ppc64el_, yes.

The full names in that file are just comments with no influence at any other
place, so there's no objection to commit the patch.

Just done.

And marking the bug as pending.
