Getting the Job Done

So far in our “Getting the Job Done” series we’ve talked about several people, who we might say “have their fingers on taxpayer dollars.” It almost seems like our money just spins in circles. So how does it really get from our pockets to the entities that use the money?

Ozark's RFD - The ‘River of Used to Be’ redux

It was in the early 1990s, at a quarterly meeting of the Ozarks Writers League at Branson that I was approached by regional publisher W.C. Jameson about publishing a collection of my newspaper columns.

EnJOYable Journey - Landmark birthday month brings rewards

I was introduced to senior discounts when my mother retired. Momma would get so happy when we would pick up a quick bite to eat from McDonald’s. She would seem to stand straighter and, with a big smile, say, “I want a senior orange drink.”

Opinion
I suppose this column should be about New Year’s resolutions. I just can’t stomach that this year as I watch the temperature go from 75 to 32 degrees this week. But if you are still making resolutions, good luck with that.
In December 2001, when I was pregnant with our first son, I carried around a tangled mess of emotions — excitement, gratitude, hope, fear, joy, anxiety, and a certainty that the smell or sight of cooked chicken would make me gag. (Thankfully, the chicken thing was a temporary aversion, which is why I now make almost daily trips to Chick-fil-A.) But what I remember most about that pregnancy and the subsequent pregnancies with his younger brother and sister is that I loved walking or waddling around, knowing I was part of a miracle.
For the first 22 years of my life I was always home for Christmas morning, “home” being the current residence of our family.
I am a nerd, enjoying learning new words
Though I don’t think of him often, every December my thoughts turn to my baby brother, Stephen.

A tale or two - 1965 Chevrolet Short-Bed Pickup Memories

On the front cover of the most recent Fair Grove Chamber booklet is a photo of a late model red, short-bed pickup. It was parked in front of the Wommack Mill. A perfect photo, I thought.

Obernuefemann Earns his way to State Tournament

Case Obernuefemann will be joining two Lady Bison wrestlers, Makayla Altic and Aja Watson, in the state tournament Feb. 27 and 27 in Columbia.
Bison wrestlers battled tough this weekend in their District Tournament. Case Obernuefemann, Aiden Patrick, and Matthew Skinner made it to the consolation semifinals, better known to the wrestling community as the "blood round" due to the fact it is win or go home. Obernuefemann won his match and qualified for the state tournament, which will start on February 26 in Columbia. "It was heartbreaking to see Matt and Aiden's season come to an end," shares Head Coach Nick Whetzell. Skinner finished his first season of wrestling 33-15, and Patrick finished his senior season 26-22. Whetzell goes on to thank Patrick for his three years in the program, "We wish him nothing but the best as he moves forward from wrestling."

The Buffalo Bison boys’ basketball team faced a challenging stretch this past week, taking on three talented opponents in Clever, Strafford, and Springfield Catholic. Buffalo Bison Secure Overtime Victory in Mid-Lakes Conference Battle

The Buffalo Bison fell short in their game against Fair Grove on January 31, 65-54. Coach Kyle Gawlowski says, "We put up a valiant fight in front of a packed home crowd for Courtwarming but fell just short to rival Fair Grove, 65-54. The game remained tightly contested until the final minutes, with our defense playing a key role in keeping it close." Blair Abraham led the defensive effort with nine rebounds and two blocks, while Dalton Bennett pulled down eight rebounds of his own.

The Eagles Come Out on Top

The Fair Grove Eagles held their closest game of the season on Saturday against Lafayette County, coming out victorious with a final score of 14-13. The Eagles have a season record of 13 -0 and Lafayette County 10-2. Eagles Head Coach Bill Voorhis told the Daily Citizen that defense was the decision-maker for this game’s score. With no points put up in the first quarter and 0-7 by halftime, the Eagles needed a comeback to continue in this tournament. There was a tied score by the end of the third quarter. The opponent made a touchdown at the beginning of the fourth quarter, taking the lead, however, with minutes left in the game, the Eagles scored and making an extra point, brought themselves to the win.

Notes from Creekside - A day of solitude

I have kept a page from a little book I bought years ago. The page reminds me to take a day (or weekend) of solitude a month. This time of year can be full of noise, traffic, deadlines, parties, family and friends and sometimes total chaos during the holiday season. Stress increases along with the pressure to be in so many places and be there for so many can be overwhelming for some. Even if you enjoy every minute, everyone can use a little downtime. Sometimes it seems there is no time to rejuvenate and relax before the next event starts.

EnJOYable Journey - Christmas Parade and other holiday fun

Saturday at the Christmas Parade, my social club, Bubbly Red Hat Divas, had fun riding through town clad in our red hats and purple accents. Around a red Christmas tree, the ladies sat, throwing candy and enjoying the cold morning together.

The Rockwood Files: Candy cane chaos

Until now, I thought hiring professionals to string Christmas lights was all about convenience and saving yourself the time and risk of being up on the roof. But a recent DIY attempt has shown me the (literal) light.

Notes from Creekside - Holiday Baking Tips

It's time for some sweetness! If you’ve read any of my articles, you know that I love working out and taking care of my body. But I also love baking! It doesn’t matter what: cookies, brownies, scones, pies, cinnamon rolls. Basically, anything sweet. Here are some of my tips for making sweet treats that everyone will love.

EnJOYable Journey - There is no place like home, or is there?

Last week, I traveled to Aurora, IL, with a delegation from Legacy Baptist Church to inspect Operation Christmas Child (OCC) boxes. Every box sent by individuals from all over the country depends on these inspections to get through each country’s customs officials.

EnJOYable Journey - The pursuit of happiness

I’ve been contemplating my pursuit of happiness. After all, one of our country’s oldest historical documents states that happiness is a right.
