Occupation and Precipice Non-Spoilery Discussion

Good morning and Happy Labor Day (to those to whom it applies). Today we will be kicking off the start of Season Three with the action packed two-parter Occupation and Precipice. I hope you all enjoy!

Occupation: Tigh, Tyrol and Anders lead the Resistance on New Caprica to increasingly deadly attacks against the Cylons. Kara finds herself trapped in a new life with Leoben Conoy, and Duck makes a fateful decision. Meanwhile on Galactica, Adama struggles with the question of whether to return to New Caprica to mount a rescue attempt.

Precipice: Adama plans to return to New Caprica and drop off a surprising person to act as a liaison between Galactica and the Resistance. Tigh's insistence on the use of suicide bombers and ever escalating violence stuns even the fellow leaders of the Resistance. Eventually, the suicide bombings cause the Cylon occupiers to crackdown on their human subjects.

  • Racetrack found the planet, why isn't she living on it?
  • Is there anything more hardcore than when Starbuck stabs Leoben in the neck with the knitting needles and then eats her dinner?
  • The Cylons have occupied New Caprica in order to "live in peace" with humanity. Do you think they actually believe this plan will work? Or are the other Cylons just pacifying Boomer and Caprica Six so they can complete the genocide?
  • Why do you think Sharon is the only person Adama can confide in? Does this revelation surprise you? Did this make it more believable when he made her an officer?
  • Is the Insurgency crossing the line by using suicide bombers and targeting humans? Or are these necessary evils against a seemingly unbeatable enemy?
  • Is Laura the naive schoolteacher that Tigh calls her? Or has Tigh become too hardened and embittered to see that he is taking things too far?
  • Did you suspect Gaeta as the source all along?
  • Let's talk about Gaius fraking Baltar. Is he a scared, overwhelmed leader, just trying to do his best (and keep himself alive?) Or is he a spineless pansy, willing to sacrifice others in order to save his own neck?
  • What motivates the members of the NCP?
  • Is it his secret work for the Insurgency that keeps Gaeta working for Baltar? Or something else?
  • So. Starbuck has a kid. How do you like them apples?
  • Do you find Ellen's actions to be believable and understandable?

    • Do you know that every time they take you out of this cell, we come in here and we change those little hash marks on your little calendar there you're trying to hide?
    • I'll see you soon...Kara.
    • Delusional machines, what's the world going to come up with next?
    • I'll see you soon, Nora.
    • I'd ask you to obey the dictates of your conscience...which is what I've always done.
    • We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We're evil men in the gardens of Paradise. Sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that.
    • One day, when all of this is over, guys like Gaeta are going to get strung up. And guys like you and me are going to be the ones tying the knots. Making 'em tight.
    • You know, sometimes I think that you've got ice water in those veins, and other times I think you're just a naive little schoolteacher. I've sent men on suicide missions in two wars now, and let me tell you something. It don't make a Godsdamn bit of difference whether they're riding in a Viper or walking out onto a parade ground, in the end they're just as dead. So take your piety and your moralizing and your high-minded principles and stick 'em someplace safe until you're off this rock and you're sitting in your nice cushy chair on Colonial One again. I've got a war to fight.
    • In other words, they're worried about what "God" might think if they commit murder. They're covering their existential asses.
    • Sharon: Hey, Sam. Been a long time.
    • Anders: Funny. I feel like I see you every day.
