Chapters are the manner in which the stories of the main Bravely Default series games are organized. Much like their use in books, a chapter in the games has a clear beginning and end, encapsulating a portion of the plot within its constraints.
Chapters continue linearly, and there's no way to return to previous chapters once a new one begins, unless one has a save file from a previous chapter.
As this is a story-related page, all spoilers are unmarked.
Bravely Default
Chapters in Default divide the story cleanly between the major continents in Luxendarc up until Chapter 5. Starting with 5, the numbered chapters instead denote different parallel worlds, and the counter on Airy's wings goes down with each new one. An ending can be achieved without going through every chapter, but the true ending requires reaching Chapter 8.
Jobs are unlocked starting at specific chapters, but if sidequests are skipped, the jobs can still be acquired at later chapters. Similarly, the New Notes in D's Journal also have minimum chapter unlock requirements.
For a more detailed story view of each chapter, see the main page.
