UPDATE: I'm going to have to pull out of my first Hooptober, unfortunately. There's just too much going on this month, and watching these particular movies and reviewing them is proving more of a stress than a fun challenge. My plan is to pick these up again and complete the challenge in April, when it's actually Autumn in Australia and Halloween/Samhain rituals make more sense. I'll make a second attempt at Hooptober 11 next year. My original intro is below.
So, on the last day of September, I decided to try my hand at this Hooptober thing, only to discover that everyone else had already started. It's somehow fitting that this challenge should begin like one of those deeply nerdy…
UPDATE: I'm going to have to pull out of my first Hooptober, unfortunately. I'll make a second attempt at Hooptober 11 next year. My original intro is below.
So, on the last day of September, I decided to try my hand at this Hooptober thing, only to discover that everyone else had already started. It's somehow fitting that this challenge should begin like one of those deeply nerdy yet profoundly upsetting nightmares where you're sitting a test you didn't prepare for.
Hooptober is the creation of Cinemonster and is currently in its Cinemonster and is currently in its 10th year, which seems like a nice round number with which to get on board.
I'm going to attempt to watch and review 31 horror films this month according to the rules, and maybe even do the extra work, but we'll see how it goes. I'll also try and make as many of these first-time watches, although that might prove to be difficult with some of the criteria.
Not sure how it's usually done, but I'll be building up this list as I go along and might include more possibilities than I end up watching.
Here are the rules (I'll move these into the 'Completed' section once they're, uh, completed):
Yet to be completed
There must be 31 films
6 countries
8 decades
2 post apocalyptic or natural disaster related films
1 something is underground film
3 Satan/Devil centered films
1 Amicus film.
The worst Dracula film (by Letterboxd rating) that you haven't seen and can access.
5 Films from De Palma, Wes Craven, Ken Russell, Hitchcock and/or Moorhead & Benson.
2 Peter Cushing films
1 film based on a work of or invoking the name Bram Stoker
1 film based on a Clive Barker story
1 film that was released the year that you turned 10
Completed
1 film with Robert Englund
1 LGBTQ+ connected film
1 Mario Bava film
1 film with an 'x' in the title
And 1 Tobe Hooper Film (There must ALWAYS be a Hooper film)
***FOR THOSE THAT LIKE TO DO EXTRA WORK: WATCH The Zodiac Killer and 10 Rillington Place. Like last year, there is a third film: Shaky Shivers.
