NOTE: My list follows a few extra rules. I limited myself to 10 movies per country and 5 movies per decade. International co-productions are counted once per country (for example, Killer Tongue is counted twice - once for the UK and once for Spain). Like last year, I also included all the movies that will have haunted houses at Halloween Horror Nights (L.A.) that I haven't seen yet, in preparation for my annual trip. I will watch the 3 assigned extra credit movies, but I have not counted them in my stats. Lastly, this year I've decided to include something I'm calling The Horror Shorts of Georges Melies - this is a selection of Melies short films that collectively count as one movie. This film bundle has been counted once per decade it spans, and once for one country (France). It is represented here by The Haunted Castle (1896) but will include more films than just that.Â
Now, here's how my list fulfills the requirements:
These movies span 20 countries: US (10), South Africa (1), Italy (3), UK (6), Argentina (1), France (3), Japan (1), Czechoslovakia (1), Poland (1), Belgium (1), Germany (1), Sweden (1), Brazil (1), Finland (1), India (1), Denmark (1), Spain (1), Canada (1), Russia (1), Ukraine (1)
These movies span 14 decades: 1890s (1), 1900s (1), 1910s (1), 1920s (3), 30s (1), 40s (1), 50s (2), 60s (5), 70s (5), 80s (3), 90s (5), 2000s (2), 2010s (1), 2020s (1)
2 post apocalyptic or natural disaster related films: Delicatessen (1991), The End of August at the Hotel Ozone (1967)
1 film with Robert Englund: Killer Tongue (1996)
1 something is underground film: Nightbreed (1990), L'Inferno (1911)
3 Satan/Devil centered films: Mother Joan of the Angels (1961), Nazareno Cruz and the Wolf (1975), The Exorcist: Believer (2023), L'Inferno (1911), Dark Waters (1993), Leaves from Satan's Book (1920), various films in The Horror Shorts of Georges Melies
1 Amicus film: Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965)
The worst Dracula film (by Letterboxd rating) that you haven't seen and can access: Dracula 3000 (2004)
1 LGBTQ+ connected film: Murder! (1930), Nightbreed (1990), Killer Tongue (1996), Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde (1971), Daughters of Darkness (1971)
5 Films from De Palma, Wes Craven, Ken Russell, Hitchcock and/or Moorhead & Benson: Phantom of the Paradise (1974) - De Palma, The People Under the Stairs (1991) - Wes Craven, Altered States (1980) - Ken Russell, Murder! (1930) - Hitchcock, Resolution (2012) - Moorhead & Benson
2 Peter Cushing films: The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965)
1 film based on a work of or invoking the name Bram Stoker: Dracula 3000 (2004)
1 film based on a Clive Barker story: Nightbreed (1990)
1 film that was released the year that you turned 10: Occult (2009)
1 Mario Bava film: A Bay of Blood | Twitch of the Death Nerve (1971)
1 film with an 'x' in the title: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), The Exorcist: Believer (2023)
And 1 Tobe Hooper Film (There must ALWAYS be a Hooper film): The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)
Halloween Horror Nights movies: The Exorcist: Believer (2023), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde (1971)
Annnnd movies that don't explicitly contribute to those requirements^ are here because I have extra space and want to watch them, plus a lot of them up the countries/decades stats.
I haven't seen any of these movies before. :)
