Hooper was commenting on the way moviemaking was tending more and more towards technical spectacle with a stress on disconnected, disposable bits and a deemphasis on scenes that fit into a larger whole. Whenever I make a list like this, I am keenly aware that I trek through the movie landscape hoping (in a deep recess of my heart) to find, not just good movies, but great stories.
