Hello Internet People
This is the seventh year I have been doing this "binge" thing. Starting out as a way to catch up with the state of horror due to being a scaredy cat, it's been a regular tradition for me around the spooky month to seek out horror media for entertainment for the last seven years or so. Due to an emotionally difficult event that happened around the end of summer, 2020, my difficulty with continuing my tradition has been difficult, to say the least of it.
That year's attempt I would go as far as call a major disappointment and a realization of how depressed and unfocased I easily get. I attempted 2 or 3 times to watch a film that year only to get around halfway through the film. I would call year 6 a return to form in the increase of films and the return of video games back into the mix, but something I would not even compare to the golden first four years of what type of stuff I was able to pull off in the 20 to 35 films per year schedule not including video games and tv shows. So, I have a plan.
This will be a themed year based around a Blu-ray set called "All The Haunts Be Ours: A CompendIum of Folk Horror" I ordered as my main birthday present with the money I got from family.[1] Designed as an expansion of Kier-La Janisse’s f**king mammoth WOODLANDS DARK & DAYS BEWITCHED, it can only be described as continuing that film's understanding of what "Folk Horror" means exactly into what could only be described as a full-blown college-level course of 19 feature length examples, numerous bonus short pieces, hours of research to pour over, a literary example, and an over 100-page book all on the subject. I swear that if this wasn't made by Severin Films, a respected group of high-end film restoration/distribution that notably focuses much of their efforts on horror and exploitation, this would be eaten up by Criterion lap dogs on the same level as that "Ingmar Bergman's Cinema"[2][3] box set or whatever if this was not made by a group of people who obsess over horror and exploitation.
The second I heard about this thing's existence, I wanted it. It seemed perfect as the lightning bolt to revive my tradition. For each one, I will try to make an entry with more outside this collection to meet the Hooptober 9 requirements and others I want to talk about.
I hope this goes well.
Now, for my sake, here are the quick rules from the "Hooptober 9" quick rules copied and pasted directly from the source.
QUICK EASY RULES:
There must be 31 films
6 countries (6/6)
8 decades (8/8)
2 insect-centered films (1/2)
1 horror film set in space or the future (relative to when it was released) (1/1) Y
2 animated films [personal modifier is that the films counted will have to reach past 80 minutes to count. films can be combined to reach that end goal.] (1/2)
1 bloodthirsty old person/people film (1/1)Y
2 1970s regional US films (Thanks Sean Young) (0/2)
The worst horror sequel from the 1990s that you haven't seen and can access. (I realize that this will take a little work) (1/1)Y
1 German Silent (1/1) Y
5 Films from David Cronenberg, Ti West, Bill Rebane, Charles B. Pierce, William Grefe, and/or Joy N. Houck Jr. (2/5)
2 Christopher Lee films (2/2)
1 film with a musician or band in it (A real-life musician or band) (1/1) Y
1 Stephen King adaptation that is not the first go around. (0/1)
1 Lon Chaney film. (NOT JR) (1/1) Y
And 1 Tobe Hooper Film (There must ALWAYS be a Hooper film) (0/1)
***FOR THOSE THAT LIKE TO DO EXTRA WORK: WATCH The Last Circus and Silent Madness. Like last year, there is a third film: Pennywise: The Story of It.
For me, I'm not going to use shorts under 30 minutes to reach this goal to really challenge myself.
Good luck to me I guess.
