Hellboy: The Crooked Man
★★★½

Watched 26 May 2026

For the sake of transparency, the remaining 1500 comics of my once 4000 strong collection are currently in their last throes on eBay.

Most comic book movies I watch make me want to end the auctions and burn what's left. Hellboy: The Crooked Man made me want to keep them.

More comic book movies with budgets of $20m or less please, because Brian Taylor's 'low budget' interpretation of Mike Mignola's (from his script) 2008 book captures the vibe perfectly.

If you overlook the red dude with the filed off horns and a tail, it could almost pass as a folk horror. The colours are muted and in synch with the bleak Appalachian (well, Bulgarian) countryside, and the pacing is ponderous and deliberate - a welcome contrast to the eardrum perforating noise of anything Marvel.

This is a movie that will grow in stature with every passing year.
