Incredibly bleak, mainly because of how almost every character is a huge asshole in the wake of a crisis and how it uses (some of the best) zombie-movie gore to really peel back how shit human beings can be. It's probably deeper than that, but on the surface it's one big setup for one of the most satisfying villain deaths in cinema history, hell yeah.
