“Did I scare you?!” - The Scarecrow
An ultra-classic tale that I hadn’t revisited for nearly 20+ years, and the most seen film of all time according to the National library of congress, The Wizard of Oz still stands as a landmark spectacle in cinema history. Any cinematic watch with my now 4 year old is a treasured time, and although this was a little too old and silly in his eyes to be fully entertaining, we made it through and got to sing a few tunes. My god I forgot that I knew every single song though, and felt like Pavlov’s Dog perking up to sing every bit.
Imagine what a technical marvel this would have been on the silver screen in 1939. The moment that Dorothy steps into Oz is still so damn vibrant and iconic. On an HD, remastered screen, Victor Fleming’s (well mostly his anyway) technicolor dream world springs to life like I’d never remembered.
This movie however, is both a testament and a victim of its time. The story of The Wizard of Oz’s production has become the stuff of Hollywood Hell legend. I’d probably be at 5 stars if I didn’t know as much as I did about its creation, and mistreatment of just about everyone in the cast though. Really makes you think about human rights the whole time we are in munchkin land…
Ren’s Rating: 16 Stars! (I think he was just humoring me though, and wanted to watch something else no less than 7 times 😭).
