Hooptober XII: 19/32

Getting through a few films on this year’s Hooptober that I admittedly haven’t been as excited for, but that’s what’s been so cool about participating. I’ve largely missed out on 1940’s US cinema (mostly for good reason, my lort were things blatantly racist), but for the most part, Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein is a simple, delightful horror comedy that charmed the hell out of me.

Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi, and Glenn Strange all in one flick portraying their epic takes on monster cinema? Iconic. Crossing over franchises from different sides of the coin could have easily been a recipe for disaster, but both the Universal Monsters and their onscreen, Slapsticky counterparts still maintain their essence without trampling the other’s. I was bit surprised at how well the little vocal gags were hitting for me. I mean, I am very much a Dad who loves Dad jokes, so that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. But I still smiled more than I’d anticipated. When it’s time to be funny, it mostly worked, and when it was time for a bit of tension, well… I could definitely see it working for the time.

Hooptober XII has doubled as a mini horror history lesson. How rad.
