I wanted to include a fair amount of movies that were already on my watchlist, so I was pretty liberal with letting movies fulfill multiple categories. at time of writing, there are 35 movies on my watchlist that letterboxd counts as horror, and 14 of those are on this list. nice.
this list is in release order, but other than watching the Evil Dead movies in order, I'm not going to follow any particular order here. the list originally had Frankenstein (2025), but it didn't turn out to be feasible for me to watch that one in theaters during October, so I've swapped it out for Crimson Peak.
