Jeremy Crabb’s review published on Letterboxd:
Maybe it's because I've been seeing so many painfully mediocre films in theaters recently (with a few obvious exceptions), but I had an absolute BLAST with The Fall Guy and its brilliant mix of crowd-pleasing conventions and fresh, stylishly chaotic action set pieces.
Above everything else, this is a sincere tribute to the unsung heroes of the film industry, propelling stunt performers to the forefront and always making sure that their incredible contributions to film remain a focal point. And on that note, the stunt work in this film is some of the best I've witnessed in a Hollywood blockbuster in recent memory, and Leitch's particular eye for visuals keeps each sequence exciting and full of energy.
Gosling is terrific as always, blending his natural comedic timing with genuine action-star capabilities into one of his more enjoyable roles to date. Blunt is equally charismatic, and the two have tremendous chemistry. I was unsure whether I'd buy these two in a rom-com, but it absolutely worked for me.
The film does get lost in the sauce a little bit when it comes to some of the more convoluted aspects of its plot, and there are certainly some logistical issues one can pick at here, but when it comes down to it, the film completely delivers on what it promises and then some. This is yet another example of a trailer doing a disservice to a great film, and this is just that. Frankly, this is the most fun I've had at the movies so far this year, and it's a perfect summer blockbuster, even with its flaws.
