WOW!

I did not expect such a GREAT LITTLE FILM from the King of Cheapies Roger Corman. Hell, this might be one of his very best!

Of course, he works with tiny budgets and so the bad acting of most of the actors (there were a couple of good ones though), and the super cheap "Monster" effects really busted this one down to a 3.5 star film instead of a 4.0 or even 4.5.

The reason I was so surprised was the TREMENDOUS PATHOS I found in these characters. And even though the premise was still pretty simple, the earnestness of the main guy trying to care for his grown daughter and the future of mankind really got to me.

Don't know why... it just worked for me.

Of course the bad rubber-suited monster was a laugh-out-loud terrible part and it worked so much better when it was an UNSEEN threat. So much better until we see it and then roll our eyes. But during the lead up to that "reveal", Corman does an AMAZING JOB OF BUILDING SUSPENSE!!! ......like, really, really, really good.

I certainly didn't expect that either. Great stuff there.

Sure it's a cheesy, drive-in sci-fi cheapie from the '50s... but I'm telling ya... this one rocked it out.
