Letterboxd Video Store: what you need to know about our major new feature

Letterboxd Video Store has arrived: our latest feature to get you adding films to your watchlist and, crucially, checking them off. Here’s everything you need to know.

RENT FILMS NOW ON LETTERBOXD VIDEO STORE

At Letterboxd, our biggest mission is film discovery—but discovery is only half the battle. It’s frustrating to add a movie to your watchlist and then realize you can’t actually watch it! That’s why we’re trying something new and opening the doors to the Letterboxd Video Store, our own curated rental spot.

This isn’t a subscription service! No lock-in, no paywall. Just rent the films you want, whenever you want, and join our community logging, reviewing and adding them to lists.

You won’t need these Real Life (1979) cameras to view your Video Store rentals.

What it is

Letterboxd Video Store is a film rental platform inside Letterboxd. Think of it as curated shelves instead of just scrolling lists endlessly without being able to make up your mind on what to watch. These shelves are built from what our members are actually hunting down:

  • Festival standouts that are yet to be distributed.
  • Long-watchlisted titles finally made available.
  • Restorations and rediscoveries worth celebrating.
  • Limited-time drops of sneak peeks and unreleased gems (only here for a short time).
  • We program these shelves using millions of watchlists, reviews and other secret sauce signals. It’s like walking into your local video store and seeing the “employee picks” shelf—and those employees are countless Letterboxd members across the globe.

Why it matters

  • Film discovery is a lot easier when you can just press play.
  • Every film is chosen because members want to watch it, not just because it’s easy to license.
  • Rentals don’t sit in a black hole. They live in our community and on lists, Journal features, and even push notifications.
  • It’s accessible! Rent what you want, watch on Apple TV 4K, web, iOS, Android and TV via Chromecast and Airplay. Additional Smart TV apps are in the works.

Lightning round

  • Some shelves will be available for a limited time only, so rent before they’re gone! We’ll make sure you’re up to speed on which ones to cross off your watchlist asap.
  • Other titles live longer on the shelves, so you can revisit and share them anytime.
  • Rental availability and cost will depend on your location.
  • We’ll be working to make sure films are accessible in as many countries as possible, though availability can vary from shelf to shelf.
  • Have a recommendation for a title we should add to Video Store? Easy! Simply create a list and tag it #video-store-recs so we can take a peek.
  • No late fees. Just late-night discoveries.

That’s all, folks! Letterboxd is built on film discovery and we think this is a great addition to that mission. Bonus points for anyone that caught the G.I. Joe reference, FYI.
