And I'm not even *in* the fandom! But all this kerfluffle about Dumbledore being gay has got me to thinking about my own series, Turquoise, and how fans will react to the varying sexualities therein. For you see, in Turquoise, everyone who falls in love DIES. That's an easy guide, isn't it? Keep track of that and it'll tell you who you can get attached to.
But you see, that means only three characters survive the ending--Jeanne (lesbian), Soosan (straight), and Paeterson (functionally asexual). None of them ever fall in love over the course of the series. And I know that people will get upset that the only surviving gay character never gets a love interest, but DOING SO WOULD KILL HER. Heck, there's only one surviving straight character too, but I don't think people would have an outcry over her lack of love.
And yes, the fans will wank over the fact that I kill off a gay character because of his relationship with Pierre. Pierre's bi, and attracted physically to Phillip, but his heart is with Monica so he never really falls for Phillip. Phillip, on the other hand, is in love with Pierre. And so dies. But you see, Monica is having a similar situation with an ally of hers, Llahd. He loves her, but she can't seem to get beyond platonic like and respect for him. And so he dies too. But I know people will focus only on the fact that I killed off the gay guy "for being gay". Which is kinda true, if worded very very badly. No one will say that I kill off Llahd "for being straight", even though that's basically true as well.
And let's not even get started on Mary's sick, Stockholm Syndrome-esque, obsessive relationship with Paeterson. I know people will be calling "refrigerator woman" on me left and right, but if Mary was, say, Marion, people would say it was a negative gay male stereotype. So I can't win with her either. Her relationship with him serves a very important plot purpose, so it's not like I can edit her out or change their dynamic.
SPOILERS OVER
Anyway, to continue, people are getting on Rowling for not saying so in the books. But you know, she's writing a whole compendium of things she came up with but didn't fit in the books. It's not like this is the only thing she left out. If it was, that'd be different, but she has a whole book's worth of things.
In other news, all of you Boingoloids/Elfmaniacs on my list, go here right now. Danny was on NPR talking about his favorite film scores. AWESOME. And it reminds me that Nightmare 3D is in town. I need to see that, expenses be damned.
In Pearl news, I'm training a team to take on the E4. Yes, over 260 hours into it, I'm finally going to make a run to beat the game. There's only one pokemon I need to see to finish my Sinnoh Dex, and it's Infernape, and one of the E4 has one. Which will be awesome. I'll let you all know how it goes.
Bowling league starts tonight. That should be interesting.
Oh yeah, if you have cable and you're not watching Digimon Data Squad--WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU? It rocks. I don't remember Savers rocking so hard when I watched it with fansubs...
