The Essential

The Essential is a full service and bar at 2215 1st Avenue North in the Mercantile on Morris development. The restaurant features American and pasta dishes made with local, seasonal ingredients. The bar serves signature cocktails, select wines and craft beers.

It was created by Victor King and Kristen Hall in 2018 as a successor to their former Feast and Forest bakery and restaurant at 2nd Row, and was originally located at 2018 Morris Avenue in the Founders Station development.

In 2023 King and Hall decided to swap the locations of The Essential and the recently-opened Bar La Fête at Mercantile on Morris, which offered more space and a more urbane setting.

In 2025 King and Hall dissolved their partnership. He retained ownership of The Essential and she kept control of Bandit Pâtisserie and La Fête. Wes Sloman is the restaurant's general manager. The restaurant's bar, "Paul & Tina's" is named for the owner's cats.
