He played quarterback for the Chelsea High School Hornets, earning honors as the Shelby County Reporter's "Shelby County Player of the Year" and a spot on the The Birmingham News All-Metro Team. He was offered a scholarship to play for Bill Clark's UAB Blazers football team. He debuted as a defensive back, and then transitioned to inside linebacker. He led the team in tackles and tackles for loss as a sophomore and junior. After the 2014 season, UAB canceled its football program. By then, Ganus' play had earned him notice from programs around the country and he turned down scores of other offers to join the the University of Georgia Bulldogs. In practice leading up to his lone season there he worked his way up from second string into a starting role, and went on to lead the Bulldogs in tackles. He was elected as a team captain and most valuable player, and invited to the Senior Bowl.
Ganus proposed to his girlfriend Peyton Thomas at mid-field in Sanford Stadium just after the Bulldogs' 52-20 win over South Carolina on September 20, 2015. Following the 2016 NFL Draft, he was picked up as a free agent by the Minnesota Vikings, but was cut on September 3, before the season began. He returned to Birmingham to complete his bachelor's degree at UAB while helping support his wife's start-up business, ThirtyOne Boutique. He met with Clark, who had resumed the football program in 2017, and was offered an informal role on the coaching staff.
In March 2017 Thompson High School coach Mark Freeman asked Ganus to join his staff. While there, he met A'Mon Lane, a young player who had been placed in foster care when his father was incarcerated. Ganus befriended Lane, and he and his wife ended up formally adopting him.
In December 2021 Ganus was hired to replace Adam Wallace as head coach of the Moody Blue Devils. A'Mon transferred with him and played for the team, later signing a scholarship offer from the Auburn Tigers.
