About Bats

(Since I’ve actually been opening some tumblr pages on mobile browser & got annoyed with how many things DON’T WORK on it, I realised I should…probably bring my about me page from a page to an actual post. ^^; Also, gonna go ahead and pin it.)

Hi, I’m Batsutousai, but answer to most nickname variations (I understand my name isn’t really easy to spell at a glance), most notably Bats, Batsu, and Batty.
I self-identify with she/they, but I don’t particularly care what pronouns are used for me. I’m asexual and demi-romantic. When I turned 30, I decided I will be 30 for the rest of my life. (Given the number of people irl who think I’ve only just graduated high school, it’ll be a while before this stops working.)
I am American, but I’ve spent quite a few years in British fandoms, and it shows in my spelling and some of my turns of phrase. I don’t, necessarily, do it on purpose (except to make my mum twitchy), but I also don’t go out of my way to correct myself, unless I’m writing from the point of view of an American character.

I first started posting fanfic back in 2002, under the name Katmon, and while you can find some of that on AO3, most of it has (thankfully) vanished into the ether. After a bad breakup and a brief hiatus, I began writing under the name Batsutousai in 2004, and have no intention to change names again (even if some of the ‘04 stuff’s kinda crap, imo).
While I have a preference for male/male ships in fandom, what little original stuff I’ve done tends to be female-centric. You can find a list of all my ships here, on my writing tumblr.

In 2012, I became a Tag Wrangler for AO3, and while I fairly regularly bitch about ‘tumblr-style’ freeforms and weird ships, I actually really love the work. Unfortunately, I had to quit it summer of 2020, because I couldn’t make the time while working retail during the pandemic, but I fully intend to pick it up again, once life settles back down.
I’m happy to talk about my experiences as a tag wrangler, and I don’t really hide what fandoms I wrangled for (Digimon, FMA, Radiata Stories, & some minor fandoms), but I DO NOT speak for the tag wrangling team or the archive as a whole. (I also don’t out other wranglers.)

In real life, I’m currently living with my younger sister, work at a family-owned local repair company (currently answering phones, but being transitioned into more of an admin assistant job), & occasionally catsit from some friends. I have an Etsy shop, where I sell crocheted things (nothing up there right now, because it costs money to keep things listed, & I don’t sell enough to excuse the constant cost).

I love that you can see how well the mailing list is coming along, with that huge jump in participation when I sent out the mailing list email. There are well over 13,000 subscribers now, and it is really vital for getting the word out to people who aren't social media superusers.

The last name survey was 5,179 responses, so this is all going really well. :)

As always, Tumblr are so good at this that we need shares everywhere else for a bit of balance, so if you are able to share this on Tumblr and especially elsewhere it will improve the data! There's a list of sharing links on the public incoming stats spreadsheet, but I'll paste it over here too:

Thank you, lovely lot!

my controversial opinion is I don’t think Zuko was confused by “my first girlfriend turned into the moon”

kyoshi-lesbians

he was there during siege of the North. he infiltrated the spirit oasis. he has an uncle who studies spirits and the spirit world. he watched the sky go dark then the moon suddenly reappear like everyone else in the entire world did. and most importantly he watched zhao get eaten by a giant godzilla fish spirit.

kyoshi-lesbians

his entire life since he saw that beam of blue-white light in the south pole has been ‘this day has already been so goddamn weird’

cousin-possum-kc

The only really new information was that that was Sokka’s girlfriend

Important opinion in the tags that I need to have be part of the post:

clearascountryair

Also, Iroh was there? He literally watched Sokka make out with the moon spirit. And you want to tell me that a romantic sap like him would not have immediately told Zuko about this romantic tragedy? Please, Zuko has known about this for ages, he just knows that this is not an acceptable situation in which to say “yeah, I know.”

terriwriting

Sokka: “My girlfriend turned into the moon.”

Zuko: “I know.“Yes.”She sure did.” “Uh huh.” “Tell me something new.” Are we still talking about that?” “That’s rough, buddy.”

uberguber89

When you put it like that, this is actually a legendary display of tact on Zuko’s part

THIS IS AN OC CHECKPOINT

give me 1 cool fact about your oc RIGHT NOW

peony-pearl

UPDATE it doesn't even have to be 'cool', give me a fact about ur oc!!!!

Bats' OCs okay current fandom because that's what my brain is on rn he's not 100% an OC b/c he's based on a background non-speaking character but eff it Yo's a trans man and his parents gave him to his uncle to raise when he was like 5 b/c they didn't know how to deal with their youngest trying to sort himself out and his uncle was like yeah ok just update me about your name/gender/whateves when it changes also his uncle was yakuza so he grew up in the community and then actual OC is Akane who I love and we WILL be seeing her again she loved how pretty flowers were growing up but her family didn't have space for a garden so she found out sort of on accident that she had a green thumb when she was taking care of her husband's garden while he was gone and it FUCKING THRIVED anyway queueing my way back home

Here’s the thing: authors know when they get a rec on an older story. There’s a telltale uptick of kudos (with a 10-15% comment rate if you’re lucky) in your digest email.

The thing is, there’s no way to know where these people are coming from. In the before, when fandom was more in the corners we all knew about, you could search LJ or a message board or whatever social bookmarking site we were using. You could join the community and participate.

You could get a little dopamine hit by seeing someone tell their friends why they loved your story.

Anymore, those recs are hidden in discords, or in tiktoks or instagram slideshows that you can’t search for. They’re inaccessible, not discoverable unless you’re already there. You may never know why 27 people left kudos on an old story of yours, what they liked and found in your writing. You just get the thumbs up and a kinda lonely feeling, cause these could be your people. You could like them, maybe. You could be friends.

But you’ll never find out why they stopped by, or what people are saying about you behind your back, and that’s sad.

So thank you to the people who still do public rec lists on this webbed site. You are my sunshine, and I’m appreciative of all of you.

saathi1013

If you are recced a fic and enjoyed it, leave a comment telling the author where you came from! We like to know!

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a slapping,

As of some one gently flapping, flapping at my chamber door.

“’Tis some fairy,” I muttered, “slapping at my chamber door—

            Only this and nothing more.”

"Does the author respect women" is a third distinct question from either of the other two.
