maxlphillips This feels like being forced to listen to the album of the year through a thin, muffling film. The compositional beauty is consistently and pervasively mind-blowing – never letting go of my ever-pleased attention – but the recording quality almost castrates it. Despite that, I came out of this thoroughly harrowed; unrelentingly pummelled with gorgeousness to the point of complete cleansing and reinvigoration. Favorite track: Ghost Eyes in the Fire Light.

Aimfri I'm not crying, you're crying! Favorite track: A Culture of Wilderness.

Joni Korpi Some damn good catharsis in here. Favorite track: Woodland Caribou.

  3. Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State
    by Katatonia
    supported by
    fyeahmetal thumbnail
fyeahmetal This is the most excited I've been about a Katatonia record in a long time! It feels questioning and exploring, whereas the modus operandi for so long seemed to be "all answers" alt rock (not very exciting). The new guitarists seem to be contributing new ideas - some parts seem almost like djent gone doom, which could be iffy except that it somehow ends up in that area where Opeth fans for so long wished them to return to. Even if the unpredictability is a little bumpy, it feel fresh. Favorite track: Wind of no Change.
    rvss.eel thumbnail
rvss.eel At first, I didn't want to support a Katatonia album without Anders Nyström. But then I realized that I wouldn't want to not support a Katatonia album with Jonas Renkse. So I arrived with mixed feelings, and that is how Nightmares... leaves me. Their unmistakable sound lives on, but this is the least I've connected with a new Katatonia album since... possibly their entire discography. That said, there's a lot to enjoy from an elite band who's lows are still greater than the heights of most. Favorite track: Wind of no Change.

J K A m c 8216 really liking new album. I've missed the sound from 1st album which I'm pleased is back in places, enjoying the heavier bits too. definitely liking the baroness style guitar bit on one of the tracks and the bit that reminds me of the matrix music. This is a really good album as so much going on but very well executed. Gets better the more I listen to it.

  5. In Somnolent Ruin
    by Draconian
    supported by
    soulsatzero thumbnail
soulsatzero What an absolute masterpiece of melancholic death/doom! One of Draconian's best releases so far, and a strong contender for AOTY! Stunning performances by all musicians involved, especially Lisa and Anders, combined with a perfect, crystal clear, yet very organic production. Very difficult indeed to pick a favourite track since all of them are great. And now I am going to hit the 'repeat' button ... again. Favorite track: Misanthrope River.
    MormegilGurthang thumbnail
MormegilGurthang A modern masterpiece of melancholic doom, In Somnolent Ruin is Draconian at their very best. Favorite track: Misanthrope River.

David Caspall New Arcades never disappoints. I feel like this is a darker, edgier sound than what I'm used to from them, but it still has the same emotional impact. It's poignant, powerful, and bittersweet.
    patentdude thumbnail
patentdude Great synth. All modern synth should be this good. Favorite track: Sacrifice.
    ShiroNezumi/Synth042 thumbnail
ShiroNezumi/Synth042 This is easily my most anticipated album of the summer and I'm really blown away by how much more it delivers than I expected.
It's a stunning evolution and I couldn't possibly love it any more. Favorite track: Evolve.

This (dark electro-cyperpunk) soundtrack hauntingly accompanies our failures on the path to achieving that...
...but finding a solution would be better. Favorite track: The Cult Of 2112.

victor_m Just caught up with this album and I absolutely love it. It's truly an audio journey on darksynth wings. Favorite track: Venger (Feat. Greta Link).
    Treebaum thumbnail
Treebaum Very dark undertones with moments of pure synth born elation. Makes you feel like you're cruising through the dystopian techno cityscape of some sort of cyberpunk dystopia, and that's cool! Favorite track: Neo Tokyo.
